Penland Obit PicJim Penland, 73, of Dumas, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014.

Jim was born on January 11, 1941, to Horace Penland and Eula Gant in Waynesville, NC and was also raised by his stepmother Wilma Elizabeth.  Jim was married on January 19, 1967 to Judy in Murphy, NC.  He was a telephone contractor/cable splicer.  He moved to Texas in 1969 and lived in Dumas since 1974.  Jim’s hobbies included fishing and hunting with his kids, riding his Harley with Judy, and he was also a beekeeper.  Jim was the director of the Amarillo H.O.G. Chapter in 1988.  He was a member of The Eagle’s Lodge of Dumas for 16 years and president for one year.  Jim was also on the board of Moore County Volunteers for many years.  He enjoyed helping other people.

Jim is survived by his wife Judy, of the home; three sons, Jack Penland and wife LeaAnn, T.J. Penland and wife Terasa, and Larry Dutcher and wife Val, all of Dumas.  Survived also by Jimmie Russell Penland, Sissy Blackburn, and Pam Barrett, all of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Cheyenne, Teagan, and Kylea of Dumas; three brothers, Garry Penland and wife Gail of Virginia, Dan Penland of NC, and Charles Penland of NC; three sisters, Gail Hager and husband David of NC, Ann Cole and husband Wayne of NC, and Jean Bagby and husband B.B. of Virginia; and many special friends.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Temple Baptist Church; pastor J McGaughy officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.  The family requests memorial donations be made to Temple Baptist Church Building Fund.

The family would like to graciously thank Memorial Hospice.

  1. Judy, Jack, TJ..I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Jim also has 2 grandchildren in North Carolina, whom he never met. Cody and Kayelee. He also has a daughter, myself, Pamela Barrett, and a son in law , Brian. May God bring you comfort at this time.

  3. I am so-sorry for-this-void and change-in-your life. From experience of 12-years, I-will-not deceive you into it-is-easy but can promise you to lean-on-one another while all-leaning-on our-precious Lord; He is faithful-and-true. Grieve-as-you must, not-as-others say is right, wrong or indifferent. You will travel pathways, no-pathway as-each-has their-own. I will pray daily for each-of-you as all-will-miss that-special-person. God bless you!
