Shirley Hancock – November 20, 2014

Shirley Hancock, age 72, passed away with great peacefulness and courage on Thursday evening, November 20, 2014, at Hospice Care of the Southwest in Amarillo, TX Hancock Obit Picsurrounded by her family.  Shirley, the youngest of six siblings, was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico on January 22, 1942, to Beulah and W.C. Carter on her eldest sister’s tenth birthday.  Shirley graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1960.
In her early adult years, Shirley graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Amarillo, TX, then worked at Merrill Lynch before moving to Baltimore, MD.  Shirley returned to Tucumcari in 1971, and soon after married A.W. Hancock in 1972.  Shirley spent the next 30 years of her career at the Pow Wow Inn where she served in several roles from bookkeeper to general manager.  In 2002, Shirley retired from full time employment to join the team at Del’s Restaurant on a part time basis.  She adored her colleagues at Del’s and always looked forward to regular visits with the Tucumcari clientele.  Shirley’s favorite pastime included playing slot machines, whether it be on trips to casinos with her friends and family, or with her many friends at the local Elks’ Lodge.  Above all, she loved to laugh.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, A.W. Hancock in 2010, her parents,  Willie C. and Beulah Carter, and her sister, Betty Ann Yocom.
Shirley is survived by her children Sean Brinsfield, Robin Clark and husband Dan Clark, W.A. Hancock, her granddaughter, Shelby Clark, her siblings, W.C. Carter and wife Esther, Anita Drake, Jean Carr and husband C.L., Charles Carter, sister-in-law, Marilyne Hancock Caton and husband Charles, sister-in-law, Ila Beth Hancock, and many nieces and nephews.  Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and her beloved friends.
A commemoration of her life will be held on Saturday, January, 24, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., at the Tucumcari Convention Center.
