Virginia Marie Ferrell, 89, went to her Heavenly home Friday, November 13, 2015, after a short illness. She joins her husband, son, and many other family and friends who have gone before her. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church.

A memorial service to celebrate her life is scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Amarillo, officiated by Rev. Jerry Davey and Rev. Ron Kohler. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. The family will gather Friday, November 27th from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Westview Christian Church, 6810 Hillside Rd. for visitation with all who would like to attend.

Virginia was born in Eastbrook, PA, on May 17, 1926, the 11th of 12 children born to Findley Justin and Ethel Marie Wilson Kendall. After graduating from New Castle High School, she attended Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She worked as a nurse most of her life. After retiring as a working nurse, she taught nursing for several years in Childress, Texas, through Clarendon Junior College. After she retired from teaching, she worked as a hospice volunteer until her health would no longer allow.

Virginia Marie Kendall and Frank Calvin Ferrell were married on December 31, 1946. Frank was ordained as a minister in the Disciples of Christ Church, and Virginia was actively involved in his ministry with the churches he pastored through the years in Ohio, Arizona, and Texas.  Although she had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis as a young woman, she never allowed it to interfere with the things she considered most important: being the devoted wife of a pastor; a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother; and her nursing career.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, husband, Frank C. Ferrell, Sr., and her son, Frank C. “Skip” Ferrell, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sally Ferrell; sons Randy Ferrell and wife Carolyn of Borger, Chuck Ferrell and wife Connie of Amarillo, and Jeff Ferrell and wife Stacy of Copperas Cove; seven grandsons, Scott Ferrell, Sr., Steven (Juliette) Ferrell, Shane (Renee) Ferrell, Danny (Danielle) Ferrell, Marc (Lori) Ferrell, Shawn (Maya) Ferrell, and Chris (Angela) Ferrell; and sixteen  great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Skip Ferrell Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o the Amarillo Soccer Association, 4146 Business Park Dr., Amarillo, TX 79110, or a favorite charity.

  1. I wanted to send my belated condolences. Virginia was a teacher of mine in 1992 in Childress High School. She taught me in a medical terminology class. She was very special to me and was one of “those” teachers that made a huge impact on me and my life. I regret not knowing she had passed. Please, know you all are in my prayers. God bless.

  2. Aunt Virginia–I remember her from my younger years when the family lived in Ohio. I only found out from reading the obituary that she and her mom share my middle name. So many memories of Kendall family reunions, so sad to know the last of that generation is gone.

  3. So sorry to hear of this. Mrs. Ferrell was my nursing instructor in Childress. We were the last class she taught. I was fresh out of high school and scared to death! She was strict, but she taught us a lot about nursing and life. Every year when the new students come thru we always tell them the things she taught us. She will be missed.
