Sharon Burnett, 66, of Dumas, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at the Dumas Cemetery with Pastor Frank Gordoa officiatingBurnett Obit Photo. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox.

Sharon was born on March 5, 1947, in Wellington, to William and Mary Carter. She graduated from Dumas High School in 1965. On Nov. 27, 1965, Sharon married Mike Burnett. She was an excellent homemaker and was involved with Girl Scouts, 4-H, and worked at the YMCA. In the Dumas public schools, Sharon worked in the After School Program  helping children learn to read, and she also worked in Cornerstone Christian Academy. Sharon had a servant’s heart and loved helping educate, mentor, and nurture children. She was a member of Cornerstone Church and had also been a hospice volunteer.
Sharon enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and spending time with her grandkids. She lived and breathed for them. Her family and friends were the most important thing to her. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Burnett of Dumas; two daughters, Lisa Hokanson and husband Dennis of Dumas, Amy Long and husband Malcolm of Stratford; six grandchildren, Ashton Hokanson and wife Tory, Hailey Girdner and husband Edgar, Dylan Hokanson, Haden Long, Adelyn Hokanson, Cooper Hokanson; one great-grandchild, Emersyn Girdner; one sister, Kay Blake and husband Bill of Amarillo; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will be at 111 Amherst Ave., and suggests memorials be made to Gideon’s or your favorite charity.

 

Franklin Dan Vaughn – August 9, 2013

Franklin Dan Vaughn, 74, of Stratford died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, in First Christian Church in Stratford with Gary Smith officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Frank was born Feb. 18, 1939, in Tulia to JC and Lorene Vaughn. He was the second of three children. He served in the U.S. Army and National Guard.

Frank moved to Stratford in 1963 and met and married Barbara Stublefield. They were married for 49 years.

Frank worked for Stratford ISD for 30 years as the bus foreman/mechanic. Upon retirement, he decided to continue working as the manager of Consumers and eventually retired again only to go work for Sherman County Bridge and Maintenance.

Frank was very involved with competitive shooting sports and taught many members of 4-H to shoot rifles. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, Texas State Rifle Association, where he was the indoor pistol director for 21 years, Oklahoma Rifle Association, Inc., and the New Mexico Shooting Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, JC Vaughn; his mother, Lorene Vaughn Duncan; his stepfather, Everett Duncan; and two daughters, Teena and Diane Vaughn.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Vaughn; a daughter, LaQuita Graham and husband Michael of  Texhoma, Okla.;  a sister, Margaret Holligan and husband EB of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Edd  Vaughn and wife Eunice all of Melbourne, Fla.; and  three granddaughters, Caitlin, Mary and Teena.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church, 515 N. Pearl St, Stratford, TX 79084.

Velma Jewel “Judy” Oquin – March 10, 2013

Velma Jewel “Judy” Oquin, 89, of Amarillo, formerly of Stratford, died Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2013, in First Christian Church of Stratford with the Rev. Gary Smith, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Stratford Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Judy was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Turkey to Tom and Ann Hodges. She married O.H. Oquin on Aug. 23, 1946, in Stratford.

Judy was a clerk for the post office in Stratford for more than 20 years, but her preferred occupation was golfing. She also was an excellent cook and artist. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Stratford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, O.H. Oquin on May 18, 2008.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Riffe and husband Steve of Amarillo and Sherry Wisdom of Lake Jackson; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family suggest memorials be to First Christian Church of Stratford, 420 N Main St Stratford, TX 79084.

Alton Blades – February 14, 2013

Alton Blades, 80, formerly of Sunray, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd..

Alton was born February 21, 1932 in Stratford to Orville John and Eula Lee Blades.  He proudly served his country in the Navy from 1951-1955 on the air craft USS Badoeng Strait.  He was a Second Class Petty Officer in the Korean War.  He worked at American Zink for 15 and Swift for 19 years.  He and his wife lived in Sunray for 60 years and moved to Amarillo in 2010.  He enjoyed fishing and loved his family.

Alton married LaNell Naugle on September 3,  1955 at the First Christian Church in Stratford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Luther Blades; and a sister, Sylvia Roper McAdam.

He is survived by his wife LaNell Blades; a son, Johnny Blades and wife Jan; a daughter, Karen Montana and husband Rick; two sisters, Carolyn Sue West and husband Roger,  and Tacy; five grandchildren, Laura Flores, Amber Barbour, Matthew Blades, Stephanie Lopez; and Amy Warren; and nine great grandchildren.

Bernice Stublefield – November 5, 2012

Bernice Stublefield, 97, of Stratford, died Monday, November 5, 2012.  Memorial services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at First Christian Church with Rev. Gary Smith, Pastor, officiating.  Private burial will be at the Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Stratford.

Bernice was born on August 23, 1915, in Emporia, California to Byron and Jesse Fedric.  She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bob Stublefield; a sister, Matie Belle Jacobs; two brothers, Claude Fedric and Gordon Fedric; two granddaughters, Teena Vaughn and Diane Vaughn; and close friend, Wendell Flores.

She is survived by a son, Darrell W. Stublefield and wife Oma of San Angelo, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Vaughn and husband Frank of Stratford; three grandchildren, Michelle Good, Vicky King, and LaQuita Graham; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at 219 S. Pearl and suggest memorials be to the First Christian Church, 515 North Pearl Street, Stratford, TX 79084.

Liz Sanders – July 25, 2012

Liz Sanders, 85, of Stratford, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Stratford with Glenn White officiating.  Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors at Stratford.

Mrs. Sanders was born June 9, 1927, in Bluefield, VA to Glenn and Ovella Brewer.  She married Ed Sanders in 1949 in McLean who preceded her in death in 2011.  She had a career as a bookkeeper.  Mrs. Sanders was a member of First Baptist Church in Stratford.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Jerry Sanders of Levelland; a nephew, Randy Brewer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Elsie Esther Lasley – December 19, 2011

Elsie Dubbs Lasley, 101, of Stratford died on Monday, December 19, 2011.

Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Stratford Cemetery.  A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Stratford with Reverend David Cary officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Stratford.

Elsie Dubbs Lasley was born November 10, 1910 in the Norfork Community north of Texhoma, Okla and left this life for her heavenly home December 19, 2011.  She was preceded in death by the love of her life Bill Lasley, her parents, John and Medora Dubbs, seven sisters, Ethel, Bessie, Grace, Myrtle, Maude, Gertie, and Ruth, and one brother, John.

She loved her life farming and ranching with Bill on the Lasley home place east of Stratford where they lived until moving to town in 1967. Elsie was an accomplished seamstress, quilter, China and Oil painter.  She became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Stratford in 1944 and was a faithful disciple of Christ, attending worship and Sunday School until moving into  Coldwater Manor  five years ago.

She is survived  by one daughter, Dixie McAdams, Pasadena, Texas, five grandchildren, Steve and Kay McAdams, Stratford, Ted and Colleen McAdams, Spring, Texas, Mark and Donna McAdams, LaPorte, Texas, Karan and Steve McElwee, Deer Park, Texas,  Wendye and Kinney Mire, Pflugerville, Texas; nine great grand children and seven great-great grandchildren, three nieces, Marcelle, Sutton, Glenda Ruth Berry, and Lorene LeGros,  and many  of Bill’s nieces, and nephews whom she has loved dearly.

Elise was the greatest, sweetest, kindest person and anyone who knew her would agree; we were so fortunate to have had her for 101 years and will treasure each of the years we have each spent with her.

A special thank you to all the friends in Stratford who have visited her, especially the nurses, aides and all the workers at Coldwater Manor, and Doctor Purl who made her life there so pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elsie’s memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Stratford, Texas.

Margie Fay Stark Bryson – November 30, 2011

Margie Fay Stark Bryson, 83, of Stratford, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 in First Baptist Church in Stratford with Roy Harris, pastor, and Jason Stone, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be at Plainview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 in Plainview.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers of Stratford, 311 N. Main.

Mrs. Bryson was born on at home in Claytonville (Swisher County) on March 26, 1928 to Bun and Fay Stark.  She lived in Sherman County for fifty years.  Mrs. Bryson was a member of First Baptist Church and was devoted and faithful follower of Jesus and a prayer warrior.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, A.J. Stark, Aaron Stark, and Horace Stark.

Survivors include her sons, Billye Cleve Bryson and wife Marjorie of Plainview, Edward Hall Bryson and wife Jeanie of Stratford, and Timmy Clay Bryson and wife Ann of Canyon; a sister Joan Beedy; five granddaughters; seven grandsons; and ten great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church of Stratford, 702 North 3rd Street, Stratford, TX 79084.

Zelda Roach Pickens – August 3, 2011

Zelda Roach Pickens, 64, of Stratford, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011.  Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Stratford with Rev. David Terry, pastor, officiating.  Private burial will be at the Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Stratford.

Zelda was born on January 21, 1947 in Amarillo to Mansel and Freddie Roach.  She was valedictorian of the Texhoma middle school.  She had worked in the Sherman county tax assessor/ collector office for over 18 years.  She was a homemaker and a worthy advisor of the Texhoma Chapter of the Rainbow Girls.  She had worked as an avon lady, helped with the 4H club, band boosters, and chamber of commerce.  She had served on the State Board of redoing the Department of Motor Vehicles and helped organize the regional Texas Association of certified assessors.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She married Ronnie Pickens on May 30 1964 in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Zelda is survived by her husband, Ronnie Pickens of Stratford; two sons, Doug Pickens of Stratford, and Steven Pickens and wife Carmen of Whitesboro, Texas; her father, Mansel Roach of Stratford; a sister, Winnie Burrow of Nashville, Tennessee; and seven grandchildren, Kelsey Pickens, Grady Pickens, Landon Pickens, Tyler Pickens, Britten Pickens, Darrick Mata, and Caleb Mata.

The family will be at 716 N. Maple and suggests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society, 3915 Bell St., Amarillo, Texas 79109

Ed Sanders – July 20, 2011

Ed Sanders, 91, of Stratford died on Wednesday, July 20, 2011.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Stratford with Jason Stone officiating.  Burial will be in the Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Stratford.

Mr. Sanders was born on April 25, 1920.  He served his country in the U.S. Army and he married Elizabeth Ann Brewer in 1949 in McLean, Texas.  Mr. Sanders was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stratford and was a longtime policeman.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jewel and a brother, Howard.

Survivors include his wife, Liz Sanders of the home and a brother, Jerry Sanders of Levelland.

Viewing will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Boxwell Brothers at Stratford.
