  1. As I do every time I find myself poring over my home library deciding what to read next, I am drawn back to where my love of stories started. I was just one of so many kids who had the privilege to hear that booming and infectious laughter reverberating down the hallowed halls of a tiny school in a “spit in the road” town. The smell of the ink and paper coming from the old newspaper rack that forever stood between the desk and the door, and the sound of kiddos clicking away at the Hooked on Phonics. Mrs Harwood was the most wonderful spirit, and still is as I know she lives on in the hearts of many others she touched with her passion for reading and storytelling. Always quick with good advice and no slouch when it came to a good hug. She taught me to tie my shoes and was my wall jailer during recess when I had misbehaved. I miss her so much still and have come across more than one situation wherein her sound advice would have come in handy. I have shopped around and found the first book she ever handed me to read, the book that started it all “Poppy”. A book about a little mouse that does big things in a bigger world, and I look forward to handing the same book to my kids to start them on the literary journey that she started decades ago. Your light still shines Mrs Harwood
