Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at God of Wonders Fellowship, 1924 S. Polk St., Amarillo.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Greg was born in Fort Worth, Texas on Dec. 3, 1963, at the Edna Gladney Adoption Home.  A few weeks later he was adopted by Robert and Bettye Whelchel of Silverton, Texas.  They moved to Petersburg, Texas shortly after, then back to Silverton after a few more years.  In 6th grade Greg moved to Claude, Texas, where his family lived through his high school years.

After high school, Greg attended 1 year at West Texas State University.  The next year he began pursuing his paramedic certification.  He worked several years as a paramedic in Canyon, Texas, plus he was the director of the volunteer ambulance service in Claude.  He then transitioned to a salesman for Ingram’s Carpet and Tile for many years, then spent the last 15 years as a salesman for Midwest Glove and Supply.

Greg had an amazing wit and hilarious personality.  His goal in life was to laugh and tease others.  He never met a stranger.  In fact, he developed many friends in the various towns he traveled to on business that he would meet for lunch or dinner whenever he drove through.  He had strong opinions on everything, including politics, religion, etc., but it was always a joy to have these discussions with him.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Bettye Whelchel and his father, Robert Whelchel.

Survivors include his brother, Jeff Whelchel and wife Pam of Amarillo; a sister, Bob Ann Weatherly and husband Mike of Richmond, Texas; a stepson, Jonathan Ryder of Amarillo; 2 nephews; 3 nieces, 1 great-nephew; as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Christian Relief Fund.  The family plans to have a memorial water well drilled in Greg’s honor in Kenya, Africa.

  5. He was usually smiling. I loved getting a hug from him and joking around. Saw him 2-3 weeks ago at church standing up front, passing out bulletins, greeting and gabbing. I will miss seeing him! He always loved buying for our Angel Tree kids each year.
