Ira Lee Fritts – October 1, 2012

Ira Lee Fritts, 87, of Amarillo, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in Llano Cemetery with Kerry Arnold, minister of Georgia St. Church of Christ officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Ira was born in Shamrock and attended schools in Sam Norwood and Amarillo.  He was a member of the Church of Christ all of his life.  Ira served in World War II with the 101st Engineer Combat Battalion.  After his tour of duty in the Army he began a 40-year career with Union Carbide at the Amarillo plant and worked throughout the United States and Puerto Rico in various positions.  He retired in Houston as the areas service manager.

Ira had a passion for working in the yard and raising flowers in his younger years.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Merlene; two daughters, Carolyn Garrison and husband James of Amarillo and Tonja Smith and husband John of Tomball; a brother, Cecil Fritts of Amarillo; a stepsister, Martha Simpson of California; two grandsons; two granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; and two special four-legged companions, Shatze and Artie.

Special thanks to the staff of Encompass Home Health, Yvette Estes and Sonja Aguilar, Odyssey Hospice, Jim Garrison, Joyce Locke, Steve Locke and Dr. Sammi and his nurse at Texas Tech Family Medicine.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to a favorite charity or church.

    Ira was my dad’s brother and I will always be grateful to him for the love he showed to him.

    I have wonderful memories of Uncle Ira. This is a time of sadness for all who loved him. He was a very gracious person .
