Matthew Howard Capell – November 26, 2017

Matthew Howard (Matt) Capell died Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the age of 75. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 2, 1942 to Rev. Dr. Louis D. and Frances Capell (Guthrie). He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Tommy Phillips, sister-in-law, Patricia Phillips, and brother-in-law, Chris Climer.

Matt is survived by his wife, Dianne Phillips Capell; a son, Louis Phillip Matthew Capell and family, Bella, Marques and Tammy Sykes; his sister, Mary Ann Climer; his mother-in-law, Ruth Phillips and brother-in-law, Mike Phillips. He enjoyed the company of his many nephews, nieces, and cousins and dear friends.

After completing his higher education at Henderson College in Arkadelphia (BME) and the University of Colorado in Boulder (MM), Matt began his career in 1966 as a music faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, teaching vocal studies and directing the Opera Theater. He also was a cast member for several summer seasons with the Eau Claire Patio Playhouse. Matt’s tenure in Eau Claire was followed by a faculty post at Stetson University in Deland, Florida where he continued teaching voice and directing the University Opera Theater. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Delta Kappa International. Matt’s singing career was fulfilled in concert halls and churches here and abroad: Dallas, Shreveport, Memphis, TN, Sasebo and Yokosuka Japan, Oberhausen and Cologne Germany, and Naples, Italy.

Matt’s talents were not limited to the musical arts. His culinary gifts were legendary. He supervised the kitchens of several major churches in the Dallas area while also employed as the tenor soloist. In 1989, Matt, Dianne, and Louis began a career with the Department of Defense Overseas Schools in Sasebo, Japan. Matt continued to sing and added teaching the culinary arts for the local Japanese college to his resume. As they moved to other locales, he would continue to entertain with his beautiful lyric tenor voice and amaze new friends with delights from the kitchen.

Matt was a man of peace, kindness, and love. With his passing, mirth and elegance have been substantially diminished from the lives of those who knew and loved him.

The Memorial Service and Inurnment will be at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1601 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, TX, on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research www.michaeljfox.org/Donate  .
