Thomas Joseph Sweeney, Jr. – August 4, 2017

Thomas Joseph Sweeney, Jr., 79, of Amarillo died Friday, Aug. 4, 2017.

Tom passed away peacefully at home August 4, 2017. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to Mary and Thomas Sweeney and resided there until he joined the United States Air Force.  Once he moved to Amarillo, he married Ellen Ruth Clark on Aug. 4, 1956.  He joined the Plumber and Pipefitters Union where he eventually became Union President.  Later in life, he co-owned and operated several bars in Amarillo.  This brought him much enjoyment.  He was always telling jokes and outrageous stories.  He was the life of the party and you could always count on him for a quick-witted one-liner.

His greatest joy in life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always looked forward to their visits and playing chess, cribbage and watching Jeopardy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Ellen “Ruth” Sweeney on Dec. 25, 2014; and a son-in-law, C.E. “Smokey” Tidwell.

Survivors include his children, Diane “Pat” Sweeney, Roger Sweeney, Frances Tidwell and partner, Ben, Barbara Sweeney, Vicki Lusk and husband Shawn, Terri Sweeney and Tim Sweeney; his grandchildren, Rachel Luscombe and husband Josh, Marcus Lusk, Michael Lusk, Christina Ufford and husband Adam, Alyce Weber and husband Phillip, Amanda Carroll and husband Jordan; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Per his request, there will be no services. Family will host a private event at a later date.

“I faced it all and I stood tall and I did it my way.”
