"Tuff" Don Montgomery Harwell – March 26, 2015

Harwell Obit Pic“Tuff” Don Montgomery Harwell, 79, of Adrian, died Thursday, March 26, 2015.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 30, 2015, at Vega United Methodist Church with David Bonnell and Roger Morris officiating.  Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., at the Harwell Ranch.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Vega, 110 Main.

Tuff was born Jan. 1, 1936, in Vega to Roddy and Irene Harwell.  He graduated from Vega High School.  He married Joanie Paschel on Sept. 12, 1960.  Tuff furthered his education with a bachelor’s degree in economics from West Texas State University.    He married his best friend, Gail Brown on Sept. 21, 1985.

He served on the Vega School Board 1978-1985, and was a member of Adrian Methodist Church. Tuff ranched all of his life and was a man of few words but had many friends who all loved him for his cowboy humor and wit.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Harwell, of the home; three daughters, Lee Jones and husband Michael, of Boerne, Jan Reeve and husband Mitch of Hereford, and Tina Hartness of North Richland Hills; a son, James Hal Bearden, of Matador; a brother, Lynn Harwell and wife Joy of Seneca, SC; a sister, Sharon Hobbs of Vega; a nephew he thought of as a son, Colby Harwell; grandchildren, Michelle, Emily, Melissa, Kinsey, Cory, Derek, Holly and Hannah; and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to Adrian Methodist Church; or to Adrian Volunteer Fire Department.

Viewing will be from Noon – 6:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home in Vega.

  4. Vega has really lost a great guy, who always cared for others and was a true cowboy. Hearts and prayers go out to the Harwell family. Gail may God carry you thru these dark days knowing that God really needed Tuff.

    I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man in your lives. Tuff was one of my dad’s very best friends. I have many memories of the time they spent together…. time that was mainly spent in raucous exchanges and much laughter. I also remember Tuff’s kindness and his love for his girls. I pray that you will draw upon your sweet memories now that he is in the arms of Jesus. I will always remember him fondly.
