Milton Eugene (Gene) Slater left this world and went to heaven on December 7, 2016.slater-obit-photo
He was born January 22, 1945 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Ed and Louise Slater. He spent his first 19 years in Lubbock, Texas.  That is where his love of sports developed.  He played football at Monterey High School.   Due to a knee he had to change direction in college.   His love of sports always remained.  He knew everyone’s team player in college and NFL til the end.
All of his adult life was spent in Amarillo. He was a fireman for many years and then went into sales.  He loved people, traveling, and was successful for many years.  Gene loved his family and was a “Force of Nature”.  He was a loving, caring person with a joke to share always.  He always was happy and had a “Bear Hug” for everyone.  That’s his trademark.  He was our go to person before computers.
He will be truly missed. He loved everyone and never met a stranger.  He knows he is loved and special.
Gene is survived by his wife, Betty, one son, Vince; a daughter, Sharon Maden and son-in-law, Walt Maden; one granddaughter, Katlyn Maden of Amarillo who attends WTAMU; several family members and extended families; one sister, Pat Wilson of Mineral Wells, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
Our appreciation to his caregivers Diane and Derk who made his last times wonderful. Thanks for your excellent care.  Rest in peace and God Speed.
His memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Corky Holland of First Baptist Church officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
We would be honored to Celebrate his life with you.

  1. Betty, I am sorry to hear Of Gene’s passing. I remember him from our days at Tascosa National Bank. God Bless, Dale Carter

  2. Gene, was as good a friend as you could have. From hanging out at the Hi-De-Ho in Lubbock when we were in High School till he came and visited me up here in Maine and I took him camping/hunting in the deep NorthMaineWoods, a span of some almost 60 years. His friendship will be sorely missed.

  3. Uncle Gene was loved and will be deeply missed. I received a Bear Hug many times and cherish them all. He was generous with his time and his home and some of my best memories are the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners I ate with our extended friends and family at the Slaters. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Betty, Vince, Shanon, Katlyn and Walt. We love you!
