Vernon Lee Powers

Vernon Lee Powers, 84, passed away Monday, March 28, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas after a short illness.

Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, April 1, 2022, at Arden Road Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 3:00 P.M., at Willowbar Cemetery in Keyes, OK. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Vernon “Papaw” was well known in Cimarron County. He had a multitude of jobs, but was best known for being an honest, grumpy, hardworking man. His family farm was where he taught his sons Rick and Roger the importance of a hard days work. Sometimes the boys even earned a hamburger for a hard days work! Papaw’s hobbies included all of Mamaw’s honey-do’s, two steppin’, and any ballgame his grandchildren were involved in or his OU Sooners, as well as working in his shop with his favorite woodworker Kim Powers. Vernon never met a stranger and loved to go visiting.

Vernon was an active member of Boise City First Baptist Church, Guymon First Baptist Church, and for the past eleven years Arden Road Baptist Church. He was saved when he was a young man being raised by a Pentecostal mother. In the last 30 years he really strove to be the man the Lord had intended.

A husband, father, and papaw is his greatest legacy. He is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Carol Show Powers. He loved her with his whole being. She and her “Baby Vernon” have built a very special life together. He is also survived by his sons, Rick (Kim S.) of Texhoma, OK, and Roger (Kim P.) of Guymon, OK; as well as his bonus children, Tony (Kim V.) McDaniel of Grapevine, Texas, and Kim (Ron) Lively of Guymon, OK; grandchildren, Aaron (Lindsay), Matthew (Chelsea), Nathan (Britni), his special Kourtney (Michael), Ryan, Ashley (Bryan), Trevor (Shayla), Jack (Morgan), McKade, and Tosha; and great-grandchildren; Myles, Sadie, Jovie, Rowdy, Tenley, Jet, Hank, Beau, Rowan, Pendleton, Rowelen, Owen, Gretchen, Beau, and another on-the-way.

Vernon was preceded in death by father, Henry; mother, Alta; and brother, Roy.
