Andres "Andy" Nunes Palacio

January 13, 1928 — May 28, 2025

Andrew Nunes Palacio, of Amarillo, TX went to be with Jesus on, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, he was 97 years old.

Andrew was born on January 13, 1928, to Maria (Nunes) and Jose Leon Palacio. He married the love of his life, Catalina Tinajero, almost 68 years ago. Together they raised three children, Vicky, Danny and Mark.

Andrew proudly served his country in the Navy, where he served in World War II, as a Seabee. He retired from Pantex in1993. In retirement, he loved tinkering with his 1949 Dodge Cornet limousine and watching his Yankees play baseball.

From a young age, Andrew had a love of boxing. In an article, printed in the paper, he was described as using a “tricky looping punch.” “It was a slugging match with Palacio having the better of the going.” He also “bobbed heads with wicked rights.” It was described as one of the wildest rounds of the tournament and fans roared their approval. Andrew got the decision and was the popular champion.

Andrew was also a musician who played the bass and guitar on Sundays at Our Lady of Guadalupe for many years and rarely missed a mass.

Referred to as “Papaw” by his granddaughters Tori and Teryn, he relished sharing with them his love for the Yankees – so much that Tori would often pray for ARod and Jeter in her nightly prayers as a child. Both girls are now proud New York Yankee fans. Andrew and Mark were at the Rangers vs. Yankees game when Aaron Judge scored his 62nd homerun setting an American League record for most homerun hits in a season in 2022.

He was also a jokester and when Teryn was 2 years old at a visit to the doctor, she was asked what does a cow say and she replied, “Eat more chicken” which Papaw proudly taught her.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Maria Palacio and his son, Danny Palacio. His sisters, Belen Flores, Lita Gonzales, Eva Cruz and his brother Leon Palacio.

Andrew is survived by his wife Catalina Palacio, his son Andy Palacio, his daughter Vicky Tunnell and husband Kelly, his son Mark Palacio and wife Erin, his granddaughters, Tori and Teryn of Amarillo, his grandchildren, Andino, Eric and Alicia of California; as well as his sister, Yolanda Garcia and brother Rueben Palacio of California along with numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
