Benjamin Lee Sturgeon

Benjamin Lee Sturgeon, 85, of Amarillo, died peacefully Sunday, November 27, 2022.  Known as “Daddo” to his grandkids, he had a deep faith in God and was gifted with a heart to serve others. He was outgoing, very energetic, and eager to live out his faith in service to his family, friends, church, and through his legal practice. He lived his life at full speed and “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

A memorial service will be held in Amarillo at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2022, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Benjamin Lee Sturgeon was born on March 20, 1937, in Pampa, to Marie and Aaron Sturgeon. He graduated from his beloved Pampa High School in 1955 and Texas Christian University in 1959, followed by Law School at SMU in 1962. Ben then served as a Lieutenant in the Navy and was stationed in Key West, Florida as an attorney in the JAG Corp for several years, before returning to Pampa to practice law with his dad, Aaron. Ben’s law practice took him to Amarillo in 1974, to Vernon in 88, and then to DFW in 90 before returning home to Pampa in 2008. In total, he practiced law for 60 years and loved both the challenge and opportunity to serve people. His love for and command of the law brought respect from his peers and clients.

Ben’s greatest love and achievement was his family.  Growing up, he loved to spend time with his parents, sister Mary, and extended family. Ben was active in all aspects of youth sports and especially loved coaching his boys and their peers making a profound impact on many over the years through Kids, Inc and the YMCA.  As “Daddo”, he loved to spend time with his kids and grandchildren. He loved going to see them in sporting events and spending time together for birthdays and holidays. He grew up going to the mountains, loved skiing, and enjoyed spending time with family at their beloved cabin.  Whether it was fishing, playing games or simply sitting on the porch and watching the rain, Ben loved it there and often said that was where he found his greatest peace and felt closest to God. Ben’s deep and resound faith served him well. He was led by this commitment throughout all aspects of his life. “Come to me…and I will give you rest.” (Matt: 11:28).

Ben is survived by his sons, Britt Sturgeon and wife Beth, of Canadian, John Sturgeon and wife Kim, Scott Sturgeon and wife Stacie, both of Amarillo.  Other survivors include his three grandsons, Jackson and wife Stephanie, Keaton, and William; his two granddaughters, Alixandra and Emma; and three great-grandchildren, Liam, Emberlee, and Colin. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Aaron Sturgeon, and sister, Mary Sturgeon.
