Calvin Franklin Powell

Calvin Franklin Powell, 85, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on June 10, 2026. 

Memorial services will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, June 20, 2026 at Beacon Baptist Church, 417 S. McMasters Street, Amarillo, TX 79106. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. 

Calvin was born in Stanton, TX on August 8, 1940 to Zelma Emma (Robinson) and George Adam Powell. He graduated from La Pryor High School in 1958. He attended Southwest Texas Jr College (Uvalde, TX), RGV Seminary Extension Classes (Weslaco, TX), and Child Evangelism Fellowship Missionary Training (Warrenton, MO). He met the love of his life, devoted wife and companion of over 63 years at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment in Leaky, TX the summer of 1960. He married Barbara Lee Littleton (Devine, TX) on December 22, 1961.

After completion of his US Army duties, he returned to farming. He worked other jobs including local department stores, roofing company, tractor and part sales. He owned a community General Store in Linn, TX. He surrendered to full time Christian Ministry in December 1977. He pastored several churches through the years including, Hargill Baptist, Northside Baptist (Uvalde, TX), Oakville Baptist, many Winter Texan parks throughout the RGV, Central Valley Baptist (Donna, TX), Grand Avenue Baptist (Amarillo, TX), Prairie View Baptist Chapel (Amarillo, TX), Lamont Baptist (Amarillo, TX), Pullman Baptist (Amarillo, TX). His final sermon was May 24, 2026 at the Wheeler Rehab.

He also served as CEF director of the RGV for 5 years, took many missionary trips to Germany, and spent a summer teaching at the Ukraine Bible Institute. Calvin also worked with the RAs, Good News Clubs, youth camps, 5-Day Clubs, and many other after school programs, sharing the love of Jesus with anyone he came in contact with. He and Barbara raised six children, and through the State of Texas fostered 100s more in their home over 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara, daughter Monica, parents George and Zelma Powell. His siblings Leon, Eugene, Marie, Richard and their spouses.

He is survived by his children Warren, Carl, David, Daniel, Paloma and their spouses; Seven grandchildren Matthew, Benjamin, Calvin, Johanna, Persephone, Andrew, Brynn and each of their spouses. Six great-grandchildren Ronan, Avienda, Eliza, Tegan, Martha, Zane, (and another on the way), many nieces/nephews and sister-in-law Wanda (Brown) Powell.
