Carey Ted Coffman

Carey Ted Coffman, 73, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on August 10, 2026.

Services will be at 12:00 PM, Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount, Amarillo, Texas.

Carey was born in Dumas, Texas, on June 9, 1953, to Homer and Delores Coffman. He grew up in Stratford, Texas, where he graduated from Stratford High School. He attended the University of North Texas in Denton in 1971 and later West Texas State University in Canyon. Carey met Janet Robbins in 1974, and the two married in 1979. Carey and Janet made their home in Amarillo, where they built a life together and welcomed their daughter, Ky, in 1987.

Carey was the kind of person people remembered. Charismatic, outgoing, and endlessly entertaining, he never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. He was a master storyteller who considered facts to be more of a suggestion than a requirement. If you heard one of his stories more than once, you could count on it becoming a little more colorful with every telling.

His family’s deep roots in the cattle industry led Carey to carry on that tradition through his 22-year career with Turnkey Computer Systems, where he formed many lifelong friendships.

Carey was a great teacher—or, perhaps more accurately, a great supervisor. Whether you were driving, fixing something around the house, or had simply been hired to do a job for him, there was a good chance Carey knew exactly how it should be done. A self-proclaimed “master craftsman,” his favorite hobby may have been starting projects at home, although finishing them was decidedly less important. He was always happy to offer contractors helpful hints along the way, many of whom, for reasons unknown, were never called back for a second job.

He was also a lifelong animal lover, with an especially soft spot for dogs. To Carey, they were never “just animals”; they were family—and, depending on the day, quite possibly ranked ahead of a few of the humans.

Beneath all of the stories, opinions, unfinished projects, and unsolicited advice was someone people genuinely loved being around. Carey had a larger-than-life personality, a quick sense of humor, and a way of making friends wherever he went. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories—some of them even true—and many people who will be telling them for years to come.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Delores Coffman.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Coffman; his daughter, Ky, and her husband, William Allport, of Charleston, South Carolina; his sister, Colleen Baldwin; his brother and sister-in-law, Chad and Kristi Coffman; as well as beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends.
