Carol was born in Mangum, Oklahoma on August 27, 1950 to Audie Mae (Leamon) and Ernest Carson Snow. Growing up in Western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, Carol attended 10 different schools in 12 years. Making many friends along the way.
She graduated from Tascosa High School in 1968. She and Burk married quickly (September 1968) after and she moved to Lubbock to start classes, at Texas Tech University, two days later. In 1970, the young couple moved to Austin, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development in 1972.
During their time in Austin, she gave birth to their first son, Christian, who lived only two days. Their second son, Burk, was born weeks after they finished school and moved back to Amarillo.
In Amarillo, Carol quickly involved herself in their church and the Amarillo community. Devotion to her growing family and nurturing lifelong friendships were her focus for twenty years. She was a Sunday school teacher, a room mom, Camp Fire Bluebird leader and many other things we cannot remember. She was involved in Amarillo Junior League, Goodwill Industries, Easter Seals, Daughters of the American Revolution, Food Bank, and many other things that we cannot remember.
As the children grew and moved away, Carol embarked on a new hobby of real estate. She was licensed in 1992. She worked tirelessly to help clients find their new houses, slowing down only to refresh herself with a Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper from Sonic.
In the year 2000, she was recruited to open a Keller Williams office in Amarillo with three other realtors and friends.
In true Carol Whittenburg fashion, she immersed herself in her new team, building the brand, and making friends along the way. She loved KW and committed herself to her work and her clients for 24 years. Unfortunate medical issues are the only thing that could have stopped her. And they did in 2024.
Carol’s greatest joy was being a mom and a grandmother. Her children were her joy, her grandkids will always be “Mimi’s little angels.” Though none of her grandkids live in Amarillo, that couldn’t stop her from attending sporting events, dance and music recitals, birthday parties, holidays, regular Tuesdays, taking almost all of them on special trips, to concerts, amusement parks and to her memorable family reunions in Oklahoma.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Audie and Earnest Snow, and her beloved son, Christian Whittenburg.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Burk Whittenburg; brothers, Kim (Linda) Snow of Keller, Texas, and Eddie (Charlyn) Snow of Amarillo, Texas. Carol’s three children, Burk (Shelbi) Whittenburg, II, Gracelyn (Russell) Thomasson, and Dustin (Brooke) Whittenburg will miss her the rest of our lives. She is also survived by her nine little angels, Coleman Whittenburg, John (Madelynn) Thomasson, II, John Burk Whittenburg, II, Annelise Thomasson, Maely Thomasson, Peter Whittenburg, Lyla Thomasson, Daniel Whittenburg, and Hutch Thomasson. She was joyfully awaiting the arrival of her first great-grandbaby, Caroline Kate Thomasson, in April.
This loss has left a deep and cavernous hole in this world and our hearts. Because of Jesus, we know, we will see her again. Our hope is in Him.
