Cary James Smith

Oct 31, 1965 — Jul 4, 2026

Cary James Smith, 60, of Stratford, died on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 10, 2026 at the Stratford Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox.

Cary James Smith was born on October 31, 1965, to Mary and Jim Smith. Much like his father, Cary could be found working on a windmill or pulling a well from a very early age following the footsteps of his great granddad Earl, granddad JW and dad Jim Smith. But while he possessed such a hard work ethic, it doesn't mean he wasn't down to have a good time. He never met a stranger and did his best socializing either on the job or around a pool table, His favorite place was in the garage or at Bubbas shooting pool with Garry Jones and his countless friends there.

He was a quiet man, but once you got to know him, you couldn't help but listen whenever he told a story or talked about the Bible or Jesus. You would find yourself absorbing his words like a sponge, walking away a little wiser for the time spent with him. His favorite scripture was "Come lets reason together" Isaiah 1:18

Cary was someone you could always count on. He loved his customers and would break his back to make sure the cattle had water day or night.

In March 1987 he went out on a blind date with Laura and they married May 22, 1987 only 2 months later. Kristin was 4 years old when they married and then came along the future water dogs of the family Chad and Justin. What a ride it has been!

Cary was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mary Smith of Stratford Tx.

Cary is survived by his wife, Laura; his son Chad and wife Carla of Stratford Tx; his son Justin and wife Leslie of Boise City Ok; his daughter, Kristin and partner Danny of Eustace Tx; his sisters, Brenda and husband Aaron Cromer of Coaldale Co; and Cindy Smith of Amarillo Tx; as well as ten grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and many many friends.
