Cecil Ambrose Kerbo passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, at the age of 89.
Cecil was born in San Augustine, Texas, on April 28, 1936. He graduated from San Augustine High School in 1955, where he was an all-star athlete, excelling in various sports but particularly standing out in both football and baseball. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego and Hawaii. During his time in Hawaii, he played football for the Hawaiian Rams. After his honorable discharge, he worked briefly on a pipeline, which led him to Amarillo, Texas. There, he enrolled in the San Jacinto School of Hair Design, where he discovered his life's calling and met his wife of 60 years.
Cecil married Barbara Potter in a small ceremony on August 12, 1960, in Tulia, Texas, where they started their family and business. As a hairstylist, Cecil owned and operated several beauty salons. He was well-known across the state in his profession and won numerous styling contests. He was often invited to present workshops and was a respected member and officer of the Lone Star Styles Committee. In addition to his salon work, Cecil taught cosmetology at the Pampa College of Hairdressing and Frank Phillips Jr. College. He worked as a hairstylist from 1960 until his retirement in 2020, serving clients in Tulia, Pampa, and Amarillo, Texas.
Cecil loved sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys, as well as hunting and fishing. He cherished his family, particularly his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Big Daddy."
Cecil was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Kerbo, and his great-granddaughter, Wrenley James Gray.
He is survived by his four children and their families: Chris Kerbo and wife Sami, Jan Moser and husband Kurt, Kent Kerbo and wife Misty, and Kirk Kerbo and wife Madella, all of Amarillo. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Andrea Moser and partner Dr. David Long of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Aaron Kerbo and wife Samantha of Amarillo; Tori Brackett and husband Seth of Canyon; Shelby Carrillo and husband Eli of Friona; Sierra Moser of Orlando, Florida; Kirsten Gray of Canyon, Texas; Kamber Richardson and husband Blayne; Chance Kerbo and partner Ailyn Canava; and Mollie Kerbo of Amarillo, Texas. Additionally, he is survived by nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday August 18. 2025 from 5:30-7:00 PM, at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
