David Evans Smith

Mar 2, 1953 — Jul 8, 2026

David Evans Smith, born on March 2, 1953, in the close-knit community of Panhandle, Texas, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Amarillo on July 8, 2026. With his sudden departure, we bid farewell to a beloved husband, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

David was the younger son of the late Douglas M. Smith and Mary Ruth (Evans) Smith. He grew up in Panhandle, TX where he graduated from high school in 1971. He then attended the University of Arkansas and played football for the Razorbacks. At Texas State Technical College he completed aircraft mechanic course work and became FAA Airframes and Powerplant licensed.

David’s aviation career took him from Texas to cities across the country. His journey began in Amarillo with Diamond Shamrock, and then Mesa Petroleum in Amarillo and Houston. Later accepting a position with RJ Reynolds / Nabisco in Winston-Salem, NC, and Atlanta, GA. His career led him to worldwide destinations and included tickets to two Super Bowl games.

Fun things David enjoyed include motorcycling, Hobie Cat sailing and the beaches and mountains of NC. Beloved horses and dogs were a big part of their NC years. Humorously, he enjoyed complaining about the many hours spent mowing grass and pastures in NC, but always had great competitive pride in keeping it neat and trimmed. Wanting “Texas Tags back on his truck,” they returned to Amarillo after retirement and enjoyed camping, bicycling and reconnecting with family and friends. Dallas Cowboys were always close to his heart.

David is survived by his wife, Carolyn K. (McKim) Smith who was his companion for 51 years. He also leaves behind his brother, Retired Judge William D Smith, and his wife Kaye, who live in Borger, TX, and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be dearly missed and remain in our hearts always.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM, Friday, September 11, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
