Donald "Don" Wayne Weeks

September 4, 1944 — April 21, 2026

Donald "Don" Wayne Weeks, known to most simply as Don, passed away on April 21, 2026. A natural raconteur with a warm sense of humor, Don lit up every room he walked in, drawing people to him and leaving them better for having shared in his stories. He lived a full and vibrant life marked by love, laughter, and deep friendships.

Don was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma on September 4, 1944, to Belton L. “BL” Weeks and Irvaline Deda Weeks. When he was in his teens, the family relocated to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he began building a life defined by hard work and initiative, learning early the values of determination, integrity, and caring for others.

Don’s career reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take chances. From working alongside his father in asphalt paving to running a wrecker service and service station, and building businesses of his own, he embraced opportunity at every turn. His success in the Sonic Drive-In business, where he partnered in 23 locations across several states, was a testament not only to his business sense but to his ability to connect with people.

One of Don’s greatest passions took flight when he discovered hot air ballooning in 1992. He became a commercially licensed lighter-than-air pilot and flight instructor, flying both hot air and gas balloons. Ballooning reflected his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for the beauty of the world around him.

It would take something truly special to take Don out of Oklahoma. One night on a trip to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico, such a thing happened. It was on that trip that Don met the love of his life and the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life, Becky Boyd. Three years later, in 1997, the two were married in Amarillo, Texas, where they would spend the rest of Don’s days building a life together, filled with companionship, shared adventures, travel, and many cherished memories.

He was also a lifelong baseball fan who loved to travel and enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—cooking, sharing a good meal, and swapping stories with friends over a cigar. Oh, could Don share a story!

Don loved his church, Oasis Southwest Baptist, and proudly served as a deacon, an Executive Committee member, and part of the security team. He also loved overseeing the cooking anytime there was an event, saying, “After all, I don’t know anything about that stuff, I just made my living at it.”

A dedicated member of Lions Clubs International for decades, Don served as President of both the Edmond Evening Lions Club and the Amarillo Downtown Lions Club. He also served as District Governor from 2010 to 2011. He was honored as a Texas Lions Fellow and a Melvin Jones Fellow, reflecting his deep commitment to service and community.

Through Lions Clubs, Don and Becky opened their home to 24 Lions Clubs Youth Exchange students, each of whom they proudly considered part of the family. Visiting those students later—and in some cases traveling to attend their weddings—became one of the highlights of Don’s travels.

Don met Geoffrey L. Collins at age 14, soon after moving to Stillwater, Oklahoma. Their friendship grew into a bond that lasted more than 60 years, until Geoff’s death in 2022. It was a cornerstone of Don’s life, marked by loyalty, shared experiences, and enduring respect.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Belton L. “BL” Weeks and Irvaline Deda Weeks; his brother, Gerald Edwin Weeks; and his infant son, Matthew Geoffrey Weeks.

He is survived by his wife, Becky; his son, Michael Weeks (Laura); his daughter, Lacey Scott (Brandon); his grandchildren, Amy Weeks, Meghan Weeks, Benjamin Weeks, Jett Flippo and Ella Flippo; and numerous nieces and nephews for whom he proudly served as patriarch after the death of his brother.

Don will be remembered for his joyful spirit, his steady faith, and the way he made people feel welcome and valued. Those who knew him find comfort in the assurance that he is at peace, and in the many memories that continue to bring smiles and laughter. Don would want you to know that if you want to see him again, there is One Way: accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, just as Don did.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Oasis Southwest Baptist Church, 8201 Canyon Drive, Amarillo, Texas. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Texas Lions Camp, Oasis Southwest Baptist Church Missions Fund, or Manna Worldwide.
