Donald Albert “Don” Fergerson, 90, formerly of Vega, Texas, died on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Clarendon Nursing Home in Clarendon, Texas. Don was born on May 30, 1935, in Mangum, Oklahoma, at the home of his parents, Ernest and Loretta Fergerson.
Don attended school in Vega and enjoyed playing sports as a Longhorn. After school, he worked for various local businesses, farms, and ranches. He often spoke fondly of his exploits as a truck driver and of working in the Permian Basin oilfields. His favorite truck-driving stories involved trips over Wolf Creek Pass hauling pipe during the winter. A couple of his favorite quotes from the oilfield were “Can’t never could” and “If you can’t do it, we can’t use you.”
He worked as a truck driver in Colorado and was often dispatched to and from Pueblo. There, he met Pascualita “Sally” Vargas Fergerson, who was training to be a nurse at the St. Mary Corwin Hospital School of Nursing. They married on July 26, 1958, and soon after, Jeff, their first son, was born in April of 1959. The family then moved to Don’s hometown, Vega, Texas, and welcomed a second son, John, in September of 1961.
Don worked as a mechanic and diesel mechanic for local mechanic shops, feedlots, and farm implement companies to make ends meet. Eventually, he started his own business, which grew from a small mechanic shop into a successful oilfield service company.
Don enjoyed volunteering for youth sports. He also enjoyed watching his sons and their friends play competitively throughout their youth and high school years. He also enjoyed playing blackjack and when he could find the time and spare the money he would head to Las Vegas, Nevada, to play a few hands.
Don’s proudest moment came in 2000, when he was presented with his Matador Cowboy Spurs at the 50th Matador Reunion. His spurs are now on display at the Milburn Price Museum in Vega, Texas.
Don is survived by his brother Jim (and wife, Sheri) and his two sons: Jeff of Lubbock, Texas and John of Midland, Texas. Nine grandchildren: Kendra Fergerson, Sean Fergerson, Megan Talbert (and husband, Kris), Casey Sarabia, Sarah Fergerson, Piper Fergerson, Jacob Fergerson, Zane Fergerson (and wife, Tamra), and Brooks Fergerson (and wife, Macy), along with seven great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Fergerson and Loretta Shirley; his brothers Tommy Dean Fergerson, David Fergerson, and Dillon Fergerson; and grandson, Marcus Don Fergerson.
