Donald C. Gibbins

Don Gibbins, 80, of Amarillo, TX passed away Tuesday September 1, 2026.

Viewing will be held from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 3:30 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers. Services will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Don was born on March 18, 1946, in Amarillo, to Georgene and Clyde Gibbins. He graduated from Palo Duro High School. After high school, he joined the Navy for 6 yrs. and did 3 tours in Vietnam while stationed on the USS Wainwright.

After leaving the Navy, he enrolled in Amarillo College as a photography major. He later met Jerre Lee at First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo; where he was the President of the Christ Ambassador Youth Group as well as a member of the church choir (who knew he could sing?).

Don began working for Southwestern Public Service Co (SPS) in 1970, currently known as Xcel Energy as a Control Room Operator. He and Jerre Lee married June 25, 1971. They celebrated over 55 years of marriage together this year.

Don enjoyed and greatly valued the time he spent volunteering with his father as part of First Assembly of God Men’s Ministry group making several mission trips to help build much needed facilities in various locations. Don also enjoyed taking his family fishing and camping. Sometimes it was only a tent in the back yard; other times, it was big adventures in a tiny motorhome with a shiny new 8-track player.

Don was very much a part of the many violin performances. He took care of photography, videography, sound systems, set up and tear down and general specialist in all things pack mule as he would say with a laugh. One student commented, “I have a lot of memories of him always being a quiet force in the background at recitals. He seemed to be a man of few words; but always was there to support us in our musical journey.”

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy Jo Parker; his nephew, Russell Parker; his uncle, Charles Barrett; his aunt, Charlene Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Jerre Lee Gibbins of Amarillo; his daughter, Jennifer Gibbins of Seattle, WA; his son, Ben Gibbins of Amarillo, his niece, Deborah Foster and husband Bo of Amarillo; his great nephew, Kelsey Parker of Sauk Rapids, MN; his great niece, Alicia Hornsby of Amarillo; his great nephew, Zachary of Irmo, SC.
