Douglas Ray Flowers

February 12, 1953 — March 23, 2026

Douglas Ray Flowers, 73, of Amarillo, Texas, went to be with our Savior on March 23, 2026.

Doug was born on February 12, 1953, in Tulia, Texas, to Gilford and Gertrude Flowers. As a child and young adult, he spent countless hours working on the family farm. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1971 and went on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in the South Pacific, where he assisted with refueling aircraft and contributed to a major cleanup effort.

After returning from his service, Doug earned his degree in Computer Science Technology from Texas State Technical Institute, a division of Amarillo College.

On March 3, 1989, he married his best friend & love of his life, Marketta, in Amarillo, Texas.

Doug held many jobs throughout his life, all of which reflected his love & talent of working with his hands. Whether construction, roofing, or carpentry, there was rarely a job he couldn't conquer. In 1990, he was hired by Southwestern Bell Telephone, (later becoming AT&T), where he worked as a specialist and installer. On June 2, 2021 he retired as a Fiber Optics Technician after 31 years with the company.

Doug's most enjoyable pastime was reading & was often found with a book in his hands. He also loved watching football, playing softball and fishing every chance he had. His most cherished roles were being “Dad” to his children and “Poppy” to his grandchildren. Being their biggest fan, he attended their events every chance he could. He was always willing to lend a hand and was known for his steady presence and generous heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilford Flowers of Happy, Texas, and Gertrude Trotter of Plainview, Texas; and his brothers, Roland Flowers of Happy, Texas, and Roger Flowers of Leander, Texas.

Douglas is survived by his cherished wife of 37 years, Marketta Flowers; his son, Shane Flowers and wife Tiffee of Amarillo, Texas; his daughters, Courtney Oles and husband Lee of Idalou, Texas, and Kathryn Coppinger and husband Eric of Amarillo, Texas; his grandchildren, Madison and Timothy, Maeleigh, Charlie, Owen, Elody, Andy, and Raelynn; and his great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Marilla. Along with an abundance of nieces and nephews, family and friends-all of whom will dearly miss his amazing hugs.

While our hearts are heavy & we miss him dearly, we hold tight to his memory & trust that Doug is now resting in eternal peace and reunited with those who went before him in Heaven.
