Francis Michael King was born to Francis Irving King and Mary Elizabeth King on December 22nd, 1945. He grew up in San Jon, New Mexico before moving to Amarillo. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1963. His higher education included a Bachelor from McMurray College, Masters of Education from West Texas State, and culminated in a Doctorate of Education from North Texas State. He met his beautiful wife, Georgia, at McMurray and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage. After teaching in the classroom, he went on to have a highly successful career that spanned all levels of education. He was the Assistant Director at Region XVI in Amarillo and then began his tenure with Canyon ISD. Mike was the Assistant Superintendent in 1985 with Dr. Norman Payne and took over the Superintendent reins from 1986-1997 when he retired for the first time. His retirement was filled with consulting other school districts, teaching at West Texas State University, and lots of golf. Georgia persuaded him to come on board at Ascension Academy in 2002 where he was an intregal part of their vision and hope for a permanent campus. He retired again, for the last time, in 2007.
Mike served on many Boards and volunteered at numerous organizations throughout his life. First United Methodist Church of Canyon, United Way, Rotary Club, Canyon Chamber of Commerce, and Texas Advisory Council of Superintendents are just a few that he enjoyed. Cal Farley's Boys Ranch was one that was extremely near and dear to his heart. He was originally elected to Boy's Ranch Board in 2006 and subsequently elected to Boy's Ranch Foundation Board in 2013. He was Committee Chair for everything that governed over finance and rules. Imagine that! Mike served Cal Farley's Boys Ranch until his passing on August 10th, 2026.
Mike spent his down time playing golf, fishing, hunting, and coaching his kids athletic teams. He was legendary on the block in Belmar for basketball, soccer, baseball and was the chauffeur and DJ for all the boys. Mike also coached with Georgia for Michelle's soccer team and taught both of his children tennis. Tennis is what stuck and he loved watching the fruit of his labor throughout his children's careers. He and Georgia enjoyed bridge groups, church groups, and a little travel with friends along the way. Mike will be remembered by many people for different reason, the strongest will be love and faith.
Mike was preceeded in death by his parents, Francis and Mary King.
Surviving members of his family are his wife Georgia, son Michael, and daughter Michelle. His grandchildren are Kramer and Brittany King, Kennedy and Gage Haggard, and Klaire and Nick Stevens. Mike has 4 great-granddaughters, Remi, Collins, Harper, and Baylor.
The family suggests memorials be to Dr. Mike King Schlorship at West Texas A&M University and Cal Farley's Boys Ranch.
