Dudley Hoyt Smith passed away from this life on October 3, 2023.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM, Monday, October 23, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM in Miami Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Dudley was born in 1939 in Shawnee Oklahoma to Bill and Lena Smith, Dudley grew up enjoying hunting, fishing, and being ornery.  At the age of 17, his mother signed the papers allowing him to enter the Army early, which he did.  He served three years in the Army Signal Corp, stationed in France as well as bases stateside.

In 1960 Dudley began working in the oilfield, where he enjoyed a long and successful career.  He started roughnecking for Baker and Taylor, moving quickly to rig mechanic and driller.  In 1964 he hired on with Diamond Shamrock in their McKee Refinery, quickly moving up to switcher pumper. Over the next 14 years, Dudley worked his way up to District Drilling Superintendent – Midcontinent Division. In 1978, Dudley began consulting, first for C.W. Kelley and then on his own as Dudley Smith, Inc. Oilfield Consultants, until he retired in 2017.  From drilling, completion, stimulation, workover, and production, Dudley did it all in the oilfield across Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, and offshore.

Dudley loved serving in the Army, loved the oilfield, and mostly, loved his family.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Shirley Smith of Canyon; his daughters, Mischelle (and Val) Serr of La Vernia, TX; Sabre (and Don) Cofer of Canyon, TX; Sha’rie (and Kirt) Moelling of Yukon, OK; grandchildren, Aspen (and Monika) Serr, Maverick Serr, Rance (and Landi) White, Amy (and Brant) Gossett, Candace (and Will) Ratliff, Nathan Moelling and Matthew Moelling; and great-grandchildren

Koda, Khegan, Keighly, Chance, Baylee, Reagan, William, Calvin, and Baby Gossett; his brother, Darrell of Shawnee and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ferdonia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
