Evelyn Bernice Moody

Some people leave behind a list of accomplishments. Others leave behind something much harder to put into words: the feeling of having been deeply loved. Evelyn Bernice Sparks was one of those people.

Evelyn was born on September 12, 1940, to George Sparks and Irene Sparks. She was 86 years old when she passed away on August 12 at Heritage Senior Living, surrounded by two of the people she loved dearly—her husband, Robert Moody, and her “older younger” brother, Buddy Sparks. She spent her entire life in Amarillo, the place she called home, and filled those years by caring deeply for the people, children, animals, and memories that meant so much to her.

Evelyn had a tender heart. She loved people deeply, and she had a special gift for making those around her feel loved, noticed, and cherished. You didn’t have to wonder whether Evelyn cared about you. She had a way of making sure you knew it.

Her laugh was warm and unmistakable, and she loved nothing more than reminiscing about the people and moments that had shaped her life. She carried her memories close and was always willing to share a story, especially when it gave her an opportunity to talk about someone she loved.

Caring for others was more than something Evelyn did—it was simply who she was. For many years, she cared for children, and her patience and tenderness were evident in the way she loved them. She seemed to understand that children need more than someone to look after them; they need someone who makes them feel safe, important, and loved. In many ways, caring for children was her calling, and the love she gave them became part of the lives she touched.

Evelyn also loved her church family at The Colonies Church of Christ. Her faith and the people who shared it with her were an important part of her life. She was especially grateful for the church members who became like family, lovingly making sure she could attend services and continuing to surround her with fellowship and care. Their kindness meant more to Evelyn than they may ever have known.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Sparks; her biological parents, George Sparks and Irene Sparks; her second parents, lovingly known as “The Keeners”; and her beloved dogs, Kallie and Peanut, who held a very special place in her heart.

She leaves behind her husband, Robert Moody; her brother, Buddy Sparks, and his wife, Dianne; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, along with many family members, friends, and others who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

Evelyn’s life reminds us that love does not always announce itself in grand gestures. Sometimes it looks like patience with a child, a warm laugh, remembering an old story, showing up for someone, or simply making another person feel cherished.

She loved deeply, cared tenderly, and treasured the people who were lucky enough to call her family. And although those who loved Evelyn will miss her dearly, they will carry with them the greatest gift she gave them: the memory of what it felt like to be loved by her.

She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2026 in the chapel at Church of Christ at The Colonies with Bret McCasland officiating.
