Gary was born on October 9, 1947, in Clovis, NM, to Alice and George T. Skinner. Gary began selling cowboy boots and horse tack out of the trunk of his car while attending Clovis High School. Additionally, he worked for the family business, Texas Saddlery, located in both Amarillo and Clarendon, Texas. This early work experience laid the foundation for his distinguished 60-year career as one of the western industry's top salesmen. He traveled many miles, covering his five-state territory, selling saddles and horse tack for Weaver Leather Supply and Cactus Ropes. His strong work ethic and devotion to his clients were evident in the numerous awards he received throughout the years, including multiple Outstanding Sales Awards, Top Livestock Sales, the Million Milestone Award, and membership in the prestigious Ten Million Club, to name a few.
He married Gayle Edes in 1974 and gained a special son, Robert.
Gary enjoyed horseback riding, gathering cattle, motorcycle riding and flying. He took his first solo flight on December 1, 1979.
He married Sandra Hughes in 1991 and gained three sons and one daughter. He loved them as if they were his very own with unconditional love and support.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Patsy Skinner and Darlene Brown; and brother, Troy Skinner.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Skinner; children, Robert Babcock, Mike Hughes and wife Liz, Leisa Collen and husband Buddy, David Hughes, and Greg Hughes and wife Crystal; 8 grandchildren, Sunnee, Colton, Chandler, Preston, Grant, Hayden, Cade, and Aiden; and 8 great-grandchildren.
