George Allen Leathers

George Leathers, 78, passed away on September 2, 2026. He was born on November 1, 1947, in Wellington, Texas, to L.C. and Lorene Leathers.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount.

George graduated from Wellington High School in 1966 and went on to attend Clarendon Junior College and West Texas State University. On May 31, 1969, he married the love of his life, Gail Handley. Together, they built a beautiful life and a family that meant more to George than anything in the world.

George spent many years working for the City of Amarillo Parks & Recreation and in landscaping before eventually owning and operating Lone Star Sprinkler, where he worked for more than 30 years. He retired in 2012, and he and Gail moved to Howardwick, where they enjoyed their retirement years together.

George loved golf, gardening, and spending time in his barn. But what he loved most was his family. He especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He was their biggest fan and took great pride in being there to cheer them on.

George was a wonderful gift giver to Gail and loved buying clothes for her. It was one of the many ways he showed his love and how much he enjoyed taking care of her.

George had the best belly laugh—the kind that was impossible not to join in on. He also had a lifelong love-hate relationship with the Dallas Cowboys. Watching a Cowboys game with George could be quite an experience, and there may or may not have been a couple of recliners sacrificed along the way.

George had a huge heart for animals. He was always feeding the stray cats, and every dog he ever came across was named “Boliver.” It didn’t matter what the dog’s real name was—according to George, it was Boliver.

And if you ever worked alongside George, you quickly learned one very important rule: you better not call a tool the wrong name! George knew his tools, and he expected everyone else to know them too.

Those little things are what made George so special. His laughter, his quirks, his generosity, his love of animals, his Cowboys games, and the stories that will be told about him for years to come are all part of the man his family loved so dearly.

Above everything else, George loved his family more than anything. He was the best husband, dad, and Grandpa. His grandchildren—Hallee Hornecker and husband Cade, Collin Leathers, Rylan Leathers, and Jase Leathers—were a tremendous source of joy and pride in his life. They will always remember their Grandpa cheering them on and being one of their biggest supporters.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gail Leathers; his sons, Bret Leathers and wife Erica, and Nicholas Leathers and wife Danette; his grandchildren, Hallee Hornecker and husband Cade, Collin Leathers, Rylan Leathers, and Jase Leathers; along with extended family and many friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.C. and Lorene Leathers, and his brother, Kenneth Leathers.

George leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a whole lot of laughter, and a family who was blessed beyond measure to have him.

He was one of a kind. He was deeply loved. And he will be missed more than words can say.
