George Andrew "Butch" Nies

George Andrew “Butch” Nies, 84, of Amarillo, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2026. He was born on March 28, 1942, in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1960, after graduating from Dumas High School in Dumas, Texas, George attended West Texas State University, where he took part in the WT ROTC Program and graduated in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While completing his degree, George married the love of his life, Mary Jean Devenport, on January 25, 1964, and immediately after graduating, he joined the US Army. He served in Vietnam as a 1st Lieutenant, receiving the Bronze Star for his leadership in combat during wartime.

In 1967, he returned home from Vietnam and went to work in the tax office of National Gas Pipeline in Chicago, Illinois, before being transferred to Houston, Texas. In 1977, George went back to Dumas where he successfully owned and operated four business locations: Nies Sewing Center (Dumas and Borger), The Stitching Post (Borger), and Montgomery Ward (Borger). In addition, George trained to be an Emergency Medical Technician and volunteered for the Fritch Ambulance Service. After selling his businesses in 1987, George worked for the Hutchinson County Appraisal District, where he served as Chief Appraiser until his retirement in 2002.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Oswald and Dolores (Horst) Nies; and his two sisters, Marjorie Houchin and Norma Jean Nies.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Jean Nies; two sons, Brad Nies and wife Shelley (Warren) of Brenham, Texas, and Andy Nies and wife Camille (Day) Nies of Amarillo; and three grandchildren, Scott Nies of Bryan, Texas, Mackenzie Nies of Long Island, New York, and William Nies of Amarillo.
