Glenn Roy “Squatty” Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on May 18, 2026, at the age of 79.
Glenn proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserve from March 30, 1964, to May 31, 1966, the United States Air Force on Active Duty from March 7, 1970, to October 29, 1971, and later with the Colorado Air National Guard from October 30, 1971, to March 27, 1972. During his military career, he served in Security Police and specialized in the K-9 unit. He earned numerous honors and commendations including the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. Glenn also endured the hardship of being held as a Prisoner of War during his years of service. He later received an Honorable Discharge in recognition of his faithful and courageous service to his country.
During his service in the K-9 unit in Vietnam, Glenn’s canine partner was killed in action in May of 1968 after being shot three times in combat on May 8th at 1300 hours and later passing on May 12, 1968. His canine partner was awarded the Silver Star with Valor, Bronze Star with Valor, and Purple Heart and was credited with saving Glenn’s life. “Squatty” spoke often of his canine partner and the bond they shared, never forgetting the sacrifice his partner made for him.
After his military service, “Squatty” spent much of his life working in the oilfield industry where he became known for his strong work ethic, resilience, and determination.
To those who knew him best, “Squatty” will be remembered for his contagious laughter, his quirky smile, and his love for gathering people together. He loved the outdoors and especially cherished bird hunting and the deep bond he shared with his bird dogs. He also enjoyed deer hunting and was well known for making homemade deer jerky that many would say was the best around. Squatty was known for cooking for those he loved, especially his oilfield potatoes, baked beans, and grilled meats that brought family and friends together time and time again. Whether he was out hunting, boating, fishing, cooking on location for his co-workers and company men, or gathered around the smoker and grill with family and friends, he found joy in taking care of others and making sure everyone around him was laughing, fed, and welcomed. He never met many strangers and had a way of making people feel right at home.
He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Johnson; sons, Steven Glenn Johnson and Carl David Johnson; daughter, Katy Torrance and husband Mark Torrance; grandchildren, Noah Miller, Haylee Johnson, and Temperince Graci Torrance; sister, Alta Williams of Perryton and Tonya Jean of Stratford, Oklahoma; several great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy Johnson, who passed on May 17, 1997, and Cleo Johnson, who passed on December 24, 2011.
Though Glenn’s presence will be deeply missed, the love, laughter, stories, and memories he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. From time spent on the water, around the grill, out hunting, or simply gathered together laughing, his life left a lasting mark on his family and friends that will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Believers Chapel, 505 N. Main, Gage, Oklahoma 73843. Glenn will be interred at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Ft. Sill National Cemetery (Elgin, OK) with military honors.
