Gregory Eugene Root, 70, of Amarillo, Texas passed away May 7th, 2026.
Memorial Services will be at 2:00pm, Monday, May 11th, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Gregory Root was born May 23, 1955, in El Paso, Texas, to Norris Root and Nina Simpson. He was raised in the Canyon and Amarillo area and graduated from Tascosa High School in 1973. Greg spent much of his life building homes, schools, churches, hospitals, and hotels. He learned the craft of construction from his father, Norris, and devoted his life to perfecting it. His artistry and precision were unmistakable; every beam and every detail reflected his steady hands and generous heart. It was a craft he took pride in passing on to his four children, Richard, Berry, Alexis, and Parker, ensuring that his legacy of skill and integrity would live on in them.
On November 4, 2001, Greg married the love of his life, Candace Root, the start of 24 adventurous years together. They traveled the world side by side, often choosing Royal Clippers voyages for the intimate atmosphere and quiet moments they could share at sea. Their marriage was filled with joy, humor, adventure, and a deep, unwavering love.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Gene and Theresa Root, grandparents Luther and Velma Prince, father Norris Root & his wife Ann Root, beloved wife Candace Root, previous wife Cheryl Root, and his grandson Kaiden Dodgen.
Greg is survived by his mother Nina Simpson, his sister Cindy Getschow, her husband George and their children Brandi Crofford, Ginger Russ, and Garrett Getschow; sister Holly Screur, her husband Mike, and their children Melissa French and Josh Shreurer. He is also survived by his son Richard Root; son Berry Root, his wife Heather, and their two children Jackson and Samuel; daughter Alexis Ellis; son Parker Ellis-Root; daughter Leah Wesley, her Husband Kincy, their son Jackson Russell, and daughters Taytum Wesley, Maddi Wesley, and Keltie Wesley; and many more family members and friends.
