Greg Mcmurry

On Sunday, July 9, 2023, Greg McMurry was called home at the age of 62 years old. Greg left a legacy that will not be forgotten by those who were blessed to know him.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 15, 2023, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Greg was born in Amarillo, TX on March 14, 1961, to Marie and Bobby Jack McMurry. Greg was the youngest of four children and was by far the orneriest. Greg graduated from Amarillo High School in 1979 where he enjoyed playing football and participating in track and field. Greg had plans to marry Linda Ronstadt, until the love of his life, Jill, kicked her to the curb. These two best friends married in 1986 and spent 37 wonderful years together. Their beautiful marriage was an example of love, loyalty, and commitment.

Throughout his life, Greg most enjoyed playing golf, fishing, snow skiing, traveling to the Rockies, watching the Cowboys and Rangers, and listening to music. As a father, Greg passed down his enthusiasm for these interests to his two sons, Zac and Ben. Saturday night was music night, where each family member took turns choosing which songs to listen to. The “Great Greggins” was nothing short of a legend. He coached the boy’s first baseball team, the Bobcats, named after his dad Bob. Spending time with family was the most important thing in Greg’s life.

In his career, Greg worked alongside three of his close friends, Jim, Rusty, and Scott in the oil and gas field as well testers traveling the panhandle and taking down Allsups “gut bombs” for breakfast. Greg later worked as a lab technician for the Texas Department of Transportation until he retired.

Greg was a fantastic husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a calming presence, a quick wit, great work ethic, and a supreme sense of humor. As a baby boomer, he was armed with funny old sayings and sharp replies. Above all, Greg was a very compassionate and kind-natured man.

Greg is survived by his wife, Jill McMurry; son, Ben McMurry and wife Hannah of Amarillo, TX; brother, Tony McMurry of Shawnee, OK; sisters, Debby McMurry, and spouse Nicole of Leander, TX and Sandy Thomas and husband Emory of Wharton, TX; as well as four nieces and nephews and twelve great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Zac McMurry; and sister-in-law, Nannette McMurry.

The family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity in Greg’s name.
