James Roy Doche passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, at the age of 70 in Amarillo, TX.
A memorial service honoring Jimmy will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, August 1, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 1100 S. Harrison. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Jimmy was born on October 27, 1954, in Amarillo, where he was a lifelong resident. In his early years, he could be found riding bikes, motorcycles, driving hotrods, and causing trouble all over the neighborhood. Jimmy was an incredible athlete and excelled at just about any sport. He was a golden gloves boxer, a state champion wrestler, and a catcher behind home plate. Jimmy was a ’73 graduate of Tascosa High School, where he was the coolest guy on campus. And then came the guitar…
His first guitar was a Silvertone 4-string that he purchased from a Sears catalog, on which he learned his first song “Malagueña.” Jimmy traveled the country in a van, playing music with his buddies. He was a member of many talented acts, including Henry Orange, Velcro Brothers, Slim Jim & The Heavy Duties, Little Davy & the 98’s, Texas Swingsters, Chris Carpenter & Texas, Deaf Smith. But the band most special to Jimmy was Jim, Jack, & Am.
Jimmy’s favorite holiday was April Fool’s Day. He was the ultimate prankster and a great friend to many. Known for being the first to show up for his friends, Jimmy was always there whether it was for a party, a jam session, or even to support a dear friend going into labor in a driveway!
In 1985, Jimmy became the best dad in the world to his pride and joy, Whitney. He doted on her; she was the apple of his eye and his very best friend. Ultimately, Jimmy's role as a loving father significantly shaped Whitney's life, leaving her with memories that she will carry with her forever.
Jimmy worked at Tascosa Office Machines for 30 years and was considered part of the family. Later in life, Jimmy took up golfing. A sport that quickly captured his interest enjoying rounds with his brother, John.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Paula Jean Smythe Doche and Frederick Leon Doche; brother, John Doche; and brother-in-law, Dennis Lane.
Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Whitney Ellison and her husband John; granddaughter, Elizabeth Ellison all of San Antonio, TX; sisters, Melanie Doche, Kim Lane, and Kalee Doche; and nephews, Chase Lane and Army Doche.
Jimmy’s family would like to express special thanks to Tascosa Office Machines, countless friends for support, Gentiva Hospice, Shannon and JD Williams at Care Cottage, caregivers Monica, Norma, and Becca for the excellent care provided to Jimmy in the home stretch.
In Jimmy’s memory, throw some money in a musician’s tip jar!
