James (Jim) Lewis Berryman
James (Jim) Lewis Berryman, 78, of Amarillo, TX went to be with our Lord and
Savior on August 21, 2023.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 28, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Amarillo in the Chapel. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Amarillo.
Jim was born to Floyd and Mildred Berryman on February 12, 1945 in Dallas, TX. After moving to Amarillo at an early age he attended Alice Landergin Elementary, Austin Junior High, and Amarillo High School. Jim went on to Amarillo College where he got his degree and played baseball.
Jim married Denise Hodges on December 31, 1966 at First Baptist Church in Amarillo where they continued to attend throughout their lives together. They were married 53 years when he lost his bride in 2020. He never got over losing his love of 53 years. Today they walk hand in hand together again.
Jim was one of the most genuine and kind hearted person anyone could know. He truly had a passion for people, whether it was at work, sporting event, grocery store, or in the hospital visiting his wife. There were no strangers in his world. Mom always said “that man could talk to a fencepost and walk away knowing the fenceposts life story”. In his early parenting years Jim coached countless young men in baseball and was an exceptional athlete throughout his life. His most notable achievement was qualifying for the Boston Marathon and the following year running in the Boston Marathon. Jim worked for Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) for 39 years. After retiring his passion was anything the grandkids were involved in whether it be sports, theatre, or awards ceremonies. He and Grammy were always there (and yes striking up a conversation with the stranger sitting next to him). He was proud of his boys, his grandchildren, and his faith. Grandchildren will always remember him by “don’t forget you’re a Berryman”. Jim will be missed by all that knew him.
Jim is survived by his two sons, Bryan Berryman and his wife Lori, and Tony Berryman and his wife Veronica; seven grandchildren, Brylie Kate Berryman, Brandt Berryman, Bennet Berryman, Savannah Berryman, Brooklyn Berryman, Spencer and Samuel Berryman; two brothers, Bob Berryman and Steve Berryman; numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association or Amarillo S.P.C.A
