James “Jim” Joseph Morris, beloved husband, teacher, and friend, passed away on December 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and lifelong learning.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Amarillo United Methodist Church, 3001 Bell Street, Amarillo, Texas, 79106.
Jim was born on October 28, 1948, in Marfa, Texas, to Nathan and Marjorie Mitchell Morris, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for family, compassion and faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother William Morris.
On September 15, 1979, Jim married the love of his life, Karen. Their 46 years together were filled with deep companionship, shared purpose, and a partnership rooted in faith and mutual support.
Jim attended Texas A&M University and West Texas State University where he received his bachelor and master degrees in English and Education. He served as a college English professor, and later worked as the Special Projects Manager, Institutional Effectiveness and Advancement, at Amarillo College for over 20 years, where he inspired hundreds of students with his passion for literature, language, and thoughtful inquiry. Many of his former students credit him for nurturing their confidence and helping them discover their own voices.
A devoted member of Polk Street United Methodist Church, Jim taught Sunday School and served as an usher for more than 40 years. His gentle presence, welcoming spirit, and unwavering faith touched countless lives within his church family. Jim was also a founding member of Amarillo United Methodist Church.
Jim was a lifelong attendee of the Paisano Baptist Encampment outside of Marfa, where he treasured yearly gatherings with family and friends. Those summers fostered deep bonds and traditions that shaped him throughout his life.
His love for sharing faith extended beyond the church pews. At the beginning of Covid, Jim wrote daily devotionals that he sent by text message to friends, former students, and relatives. These messages were forwarded from person to person, eventually reaching individuals Jim never met. Many shared that his words encouraged them, strengthened their faith, and became a comforting part of their day.
Jim also cherished researching his Scottish and Irish heritage. He found joy in tracing family stories, exploring ancestral roots, and sharing his discoveries with those he loved.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his brother and sister-in-law Tommy and A’dell Morris; his pets Coco, Bella and sidekick, Buster; an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends; as well as many colleagues and former students who will carry his memory in their hearts.
