Jerry David Whitfield

Jerry David Whitfield, of Amarillo, TX passed away August 2, 2026.

A crossover tribute will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 16, 2026 at Idol Art Studio, 2918 W. 6th St. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Born to Harvey Henry and Flora Emily Whitfield, Jerry was a bright and beautiful light in the family. He was blessed with a loving family and many long-time friends. His love of music was infectious. He brought his heart to the stage and pure joy to his audiences. Jerry started playing bass guitar with bands around the age of fifteen. It was discovered that Jerry was diabetic on his fourteenth birthday. Fifty-eight years of living with a chronic illness is rare. Jerry received a bronze medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center from Boston recognizing him for fifty years of courage living with diabetes. He was proud and honored.

Jerry was a Native American and was proud of his heritage. He even learned to speak Comanche. A big lover of nature, Jerry and Kim enjoyed trips to the mountains. They fell in love in Taos. It was their special place, and many happy memories were made there. Animals were especially drawn to Jerry; wild and domestic animals would just walk right up to him.

Jerry was a journeyman electrician and proud member of the IBEW Local 602. He entered the apprenticeship in 1983. His initiation was May 1, 1985 and completed the apprenticeship in 1987. Later in his career, he was on the apprenticeship committee where he recruited new electricians and helped them get into the program. Jerry retired on disability in 2016.

Jerry didn’t just love music, he embodied it. He breathed it. Music was in his soul. If you ever saw him play, he put it all out there heart and soul. He played in a way to give joy to his audience. Some of the bands he played with include Village Rock, Dr. Juice, Rock Bottom, Steel Pony, King’s Daydream, Barcode, and finally Gary Ray Grice (RIP), who he’s probably jamming with as we speak.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Henry and Flora Emily Whitfield; brother, James Whitfield; granddaughter, Kurston Whitfield; sister, Lettie Ann Whitfield; uncle, Gerald Wayne Whitfield; cousin, Gwyn Dobbs; and great-niece, Destiny Gustafson.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Kim Whitfield; son, Jerry David Whitfield II and Wayne Adam Whitfield (Susan); grandchildren, Julian and Lilly McKee, Colton and Ronny Whitfield; nieces and nephews, Lori Bullcazzo, Lisa Whitfield Gonzales, and James Whitfield; cousins, Jim Whitfield, Sydney Gustafson, Kelley V. Gustafson, Gerald Wayne Whitfield, John Dabney, Terry and Larry Chandler, Linda Wright-Nichols, Wynn Ross, Lynn Haley, Janet Walters, and Jeri Gardner.
