Joan Elizabeth Horn, 81, passed away on June 17, 2026. She lived a life dedicated to her family, friends and her faith that guided her throughout life.
Joan was born in Dallas, Texas, to Dorothy Smith Ragsdale and Thomas Henry Ragsdale. She graduated from Adamson High School then attended Texas Christian University, where she studied French and English, leading to a lifelong appreciation for language, learning and culture.
Joan was married to H. Joe Horn in Dallas, TX, and shared 58 years of marriage; a partnership marked by love, devotion, and unwavering commitment. They made their home in Amarillo, Texas, where she and her beloved husband built a life together and raised their family.
Joan’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her husband, Joe, her two children and four grandchildren, Rachelle (Paul), John and Aubrey, Alan (Brittany), Hayden and Samuel, and her brother, Jim Ragsdale (Manouche). She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Ragsdale Hornish (Dale). She leaves behind a legacy of faith, grace, and love.
Joan’s warmth, kindness, and servant’s heart were evident to all who knew her. A faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she devoted herself to her church family, her many friendships, and service to the Amarillo community. She served as a church Elder, Stephen Minister, and within her community Thursday Bible Study. She found joy committing time throughout her life to The Lone Star Ballet, Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Little Theater, Art Alliance and Botanical Garden, Texas Plains Girl Scout Council, Opportunity School, and as a member of P.E.O. amongst many others. She loved cooking, gardening, hosting friends and family in her home, and traveling throughout the world with her husband and family.
Joan found comfort and hope in Scripture, especially in her favorite passage, Lamentations 3:22–23: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
During her final years, Joan was graced by the loving care and support of her devoted caregivers. The family is grateful for their faithful service over nearly 5 years.
A celebration of life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 11 am, with reception to follow. A private family burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. Memorial Donations may be made to Opportunity School Nationally Accredited Preschool (https://www.opportunityschool.com).
