Joe Martin Cummings, affectionately known as “Breathing Hard” to many, passed from this life on September 1, 2026, in Canyon, Texas.
Joe was born on March 4, 1943, in Arlington, Texas, to John Raymond & Dawn Calhoun Cummings. He grew up in Arlington and remained connected to many of his childhood friends and classmates throughout his life.
Joe lived a full and adventurous life. He proudly served his country as a United States Marine, completing two tours in Vietnam. Being a Marine was something he carried with great pride throughout his life—once a Marine, always a Marine.
Over the years, Joe wore many hats. He worked in pharmaceutical sales, sold cars, and eventually found his way into the classroom, where he spent more than 20 years as a fifth-grade teacher. His years as an educator gave him the opportunity to make an impact on countless students and families.
Joe also had a love for adventure and seeing the world. His travels took him to places including Spain, Japan, Germany, Russia, and throughout Europe. He loved scuba diving, golfing, dancing, playing pool, and—perhaps most of all—telling stories. And anyone who knew Joe knows they were rarely short stories. They were long, long stories, usually told with plenty of personality.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves behind many dear friends, former students, and others whose lives were touched by knowing him.
Joe lived a life filled with service, adventure, friendship, laughter, and plenty of stories worth telling. Semper Fi, Joe. Rest in peace.
