Joe Arnold Linger, age 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2026. A longtime resident of Vega, Texas, Joe lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his faith, and his community.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 27, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Vega, with Jim Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park at Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers of Vega.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Eva Linger. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer Linger, and his three daughters: Sandy, Laura, and Susan. He was a proud grandfather to Vivian, Victoria, Timmy, Jonathan, Haley, and Madison, and a cherished great-grandfather to River, Annabel, Sage, Adeline, and Audrey.

Joe graduated from Vega High School in 1964 and went on to attend Oklahoma Panhandle State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1972. Following graduation, he began his career with the City of Terrell, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Jennifer.

In 1978, Joe joined the City of Austin Water and Wastewater Department, where he built a distinguished and meaningful career. He also served as an instructor with Texas A&M University’s Engineering Extension Service. Joe earned both his Class A Wastewater Certificate and his Grade A Water Certificate, proudly becoming a member of the “Double A Club.” He was an active member of the Texas Water Utilities Association (TWUA), serving in leadership roles as vice president and president over the years. Joe retired from the City of Austin in October 2007.

In recognition of his dedication and lasting contributions, the City of Austin honored Joe by naming a street “Linger Lane” after him—an enduring tribute to the impact he made through his work and service.

While Joe was proud of his professional accomplishments, his greatest joy was always his family. As the only man in a household full of women—including even the family dog—he often joked about being outnumbered, but in truth, he treasured every moment. Joe was known for his selfless nature, always putting others before himself and offering quiet strength and care to those around him.

After retirement, Joe and Jennifer returned to Vega to care for his ailing parents. They became devoted members of First Baptist Church of Vega, where Joe served as a deacon and led Sunday School, continuing his lifelong commitment to serving others.

Joe’s presence brought comfort, warmth, and steady guidance to all who knew him. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on through the many lives he has touched.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Vega or to the Vega Volunteer Fire Department.
