Joyce Nell Marshall

In the early morning of November 25, 2023, under the radiant light of a Beaver Moon, Joyce Nell Marshall, nee Thompson, joined all the angels waiting for her in heaven. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by adoring family and loving friends in Amarillo, Texas, where she had lived for many years.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 PM, Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

The thirteenth of fifteen children, Joyce was born in Ballinger, Texas on December 26, 1931 into a depression-era family of share-croppers, and from these humble beginnings she rose to prominence as a pillar of the business, church, and social life in the communities she touched. She worked for a time with Mary Kay Cosmetics and later joined Lady Venus, where she won the “green cadillac” so often that it was dubbed the “Joycemobile.” With an entrepreneurial spirit she later founded Djinni Cosmetics while residing in the Colony, repeatedly earning the title of Businesswoman of the Year.

With a boundless spirit of adventure, Joyce loved to travel, exploring Europe, Asia, and South America, and she was always eager to expand the horizons of her own experience. Just one month shy of her 85th birthday she soared on a parasail in Mexico to the delight of her less intrepid daughters, who watched in awe.

Proud of her family, kind to her many pets, and generous to a fault, Joyce gave freely to many foundations and charities. Famous for her crispy bacon and “Nanny pancakes,” she made sure that no one ever left her home hungry.

Joyce is survived by two of her four children, Kim Robertson of Shelton, Connecticut, and Leisa Helton of Amarillo, along with ten grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Preceding her passing, her two daughters Randi Vaughn and Nancy Fridinger are remembered with love.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations to Nanny’s favorite charity: St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
