Kelly Eugene Hanks

Kelly Eugene Hanks, 64, of Amarillo passed away peacefully at home Sunday, July 23, 2023, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Kelly is survived by his wife, Kimary Mason-Hanks; granddaughters Griffon and Grier Mason; Brother Knicky Hanks (Shana), niece Shaley Hanks-Kenyon (Rocky), great nephew Ryden Kenyon all of Amarillo and numerous cousins and close friends.

Honorary Pallbearers: Lesley Barrett, Jeff Young, Ernie Collie, Earnest “Wiegie” Wayland, Kevin Cooper, all of Amarillo, and Kenneth Artis, Jr. of Weatherford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Yvonne Hanks, and stepdaughter, Mandy Mason.

Kelly was born on December 11, 1958, in Snyder, Texas, to Bill and Yvonne Hanks. After the family moved to Amarillo, he attended Highland Park High School and graduated from Caprock High School in 1977. He also attended Western Texas College in Snyder on a Rodeo scholarship. He and Kim raised Mandy in Canyon, before relocating to Amarillo. He worked for the past 25 years for Saia LTL Freight in Amarillo.

He married the love of his life, Kimary Mason, in Canyon, Texas, 1998. They recently celebrated their 25th anniversary, although they have been together for 41 years.

Kelly was a great bareback rider back in the day. He loved the rodeo life and excitement filled the air in the arenas when Kelly rode. His remarkable style impressed the judges as well as the onlookers. Cousins followed him from town to town to watch him ride. Some of his cousins were well acquainted with Kelly’s best friends and fellow cowboys. Later, he began playing golf. He played in tournaments and went on a number of golf trips. Along the way, Kelly made lifelong friends who are still known by the entire family. His friends stayed close and spent quality time with him throughout many years.

Over the years, he had several dogs and loved them all. Everyone remembers his dog, Nasty, who went missing and was found by his best friend, Lesley, running on the highway who returned him to Kelly. His dog Seven was right by his side in the end.

Kelly was kind, had a great sense of humor, and embodied the true meaning of being a MAN. He did not complain about life, just lived it to the fullest. He loved his family, his friends, and his pets…and they ALL know it.

The Celebration of Life is Saturday, August 5th, 2023, 10:00 a.m. at Arena of Life Church, 8827 South Washington, Amarillo, with Pastor Travis Bennett officiating.
