1944 Larry 2026

Larry Musick

Jan 23, 1944 — Jun 22, 2026

Thomas Larry Musick, 82, of Amarillo, died on Monday, June 22, 2026.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2026, in Boxwell Brothers’ Ivy Chapel with Jared Fuller, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Larry was born in Wichita Falls, on January 23, 1944, to Thomas Benjamin “T.B.” and Freda Hilda (Wiist) Musick. He moved to Amarillo in 1960, played tennis at (old) Amarillo High, worked at the Spud Nut Shop before school and Lester Motor Co. in the afternoons, and graduated in 1962. He then attended Amarillo College. He served six years in the U.S. Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1971 as a Staff Sergeant (E-6) where he was in charge of the motor pool. Oftentimes, a case of bourbon or a box of steaks would appear and somehow, as if by magic, Larry was always able to get an officer’s vehicle running just in the nick of time. He met his wife, Jerrie Laureice (Rexrode), in September 1967 and proposed to her on only their second date with a ring he “hand-crafted” from a pull tab from a beer can. She said “no.” They married soon thereafter on January 20, 1968, and remained married for over 45 years until her death in 2013. Together they raised two boys, numerous dogs, and lived in the same house since 1975.

Larry was a lifelong mechanic having worked at Lester’s for 57-years, beginning in high school and eventually buying and owning the business from 1980 to 2017. He drove the #98 stock car and late model on dirt tracks throughout the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma with the help of his dad, brother, and many friends. His famed Corvette late model, hand-built by Larry and his brother, is on display at the Amarillo Area Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum. He remained a racing fan for life and traveled to NASCAR races across the country and made an annual trip to the Chili Bowl Nationals for many years. He coached Little League, umpired, and was eventually elected league president. He also coached Kids Inc. football where he would practice against the boys with no pads or helmet. He enjoyed fishing at Lake Tanglewood and made several fishing trips to Mexico and Canada. He was terrible at golf, but the wind never affected his shot which was rarely more than a few feet off the ground. As the boys grew up, he cheered on the Canyon Eagles and Randall Raiders, and enjoyed traveling with his wife, including trips to London and Paris, New England, Alaska, and “treasure” hunting at estate sales all over Amarillo. For the past several years, he would meet some of his best buddies for breakfast every Tuesday where they would share tall tales and somewhat true stories. Ornery and mischievous to the very end, everyone seems to have a story about “that one time” and Larry.

Survivors include his two sons, Todd of Austin and Cory, wife Stephanie, and two grandsons, Bayne and Boone, of Amarillo; brother Chuck Musick and wife Monica of Amarillo; sister-in-law Luana Rexrode of Bushland; three nephews, Bill Rexrode, wife Suzannah, and family of Bushland, Charley Musick, wife Christi, and family of Amarillo, and Blase Musick, wife Ivy, and family stationed at Holloman AFB; five nieces, Susan Humphrey and husband Kevin of Wichita Falls, Leslea Miller, husband Steve, and family of Bangs, Jessica Hale, husband Sonny, and family of Bushland, Missy Musick of Amarillo, and Breann Musick, husband Sebastian, and family of Lubbock; and an ever growing number of great-nephews, great-nieces, and cousins removed. He was preceded in death by his wife Jerrie, his parents, his sister Ninell, brother-in-law Rodney Rexrode, father-in-law W.C. “Dub” Rexrode, and mother-in-law Billie Mae Rexrode. The family also wants to acknowledge and thank his companion, Eileen Little of Amarillo, who has brought him much joy, friendship, and adventure over the past few years.
