Martha Castillo, 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 16, 2026, surrounded by her loving family in Amarillo, Texas. She was born on October 24, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, to Andres Cano and Maria Cano.
Martha was united in marriage to Hermenejildo Mejia, and together they were blessed with six children. She had a deep love for life and an unwavering faith in the Lord. Martha found joy in praising Him through singing, dancing, and praying with and over her family. She also had a passion for boxing and fondly reminisced about her time as a luchadora. Above all, she cherished her family, especially her great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. In addition to spending time with her loved ones, Martha enjoyed visiting the Wesley Activity Center, where she gathered with friends and shared many joyful moments.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Juan Neponuzeno; and two children, Lourdes and Jose.
Martha is survived by her four daughters: Susana Estrada (Jose) of Amarillo, Texas; Antonia Mejia (Frank) of Amarillo, Texas; Leticia De la Rosa (Andres) of Dumas, Texas; and Carmen Mejia (Jimmy) of Amarillo, Texas; and a son, Juan Mejia (Elizabeth) of Lubbock, Texas. She is also survived by her three sisters: Rosa Arrieta of Santa Teresa, New Mexico, Alicia Martinez of Amarillo, Texas and Josefina Peralta of Wichita, Kansas; and two brothers: Arturo Lugo of El Paso, Texas and Ramiro Cano of Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Martha leaves behind 16 grandchildren: Yesenia Avila, Rogelio Herrera, Gabriela Mejia, Carlos Garcia, Adriana Avila, Dora Garcia, Ivonne Mejia, Ivette Mejia, Mark Hernandez, Omar Hernandez, Iris Hernandez, Aaron Hernandez, Miriam Castillo, Lazaro Mota, Jose Javalera, and Elizabeth Kassa; as well as 28 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and dear friends.
Rosary will be said at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 17, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 18, 2026 at St. Laurence Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
