Martha Ann Johnson

Aug 29, 1922 — Aug 15, 2026

Martha Ann Johnson was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 29, 1922, to Mary and Robert Johnson. She had one brother, Robert Johnson (Julianne), through whom she became lovingly known as "Auntie" by her nephew, Donald Johnson (Dona), and her niece, Betty Becannon (Larry).

Martha Ann attended Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago and later completed one year at Wright Junior College. She worked as a secretary and payroll clerk for an insurance consulting firm for 37 years.

She was an active member of Hermosa Methodist Church in Chicago, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served as a sponsor for girls ages 14 to 18. In 1964 she transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church of Evanston, where she assisted with memorial services and volunteered on the team responsible for mailing the church newsletter.

Martha Ann's lifetime of service was perhaps best exemplified by her 33 years of volunteer work at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston (1988-2023), where she served in the Surgical Waiting Room and at the Information Desk. She also served the Evanston community as an Election Judge for 15 years.

Her leadership extended to many organizations: she served as Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge; Past President of the Business and Professional Women Chapter of Evanston; Past District Director for 11 Chapters of the Business and Professional Women of Greater Chicago; Past President of the Evanston chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization); Assistant Girl Scout Leader in Chicago; and Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Ridge/Davis Co-operative for two years. Martha Ann loved to travel, visiting 28 countries and enjoying three cruises.

She is survived by her beloved nephew and niece, Don and Betty; four great-nieces and nephews-Erik Johnson (Jessica), Amelia Johnson (Andrew Goldner), Jennifer Robles, and Tiffany Hulstine (Richard); and three great-great-nieces: Alana Robles, Elise Hulstine, and Madison Hulstine.

Memorial services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Evanson, IL. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
