Michael Edward “Mike” McKay of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 60.
Born on May 29, 1965, Mike grew up in Lubbock, where he graduated from Lubbock High School before earning his degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Though a Longhorn by diploma, he was known for his loyalty to the Aggies — and for the good-natured ribbing that came from being married to a Red Raider.
For 34 wonderful years, Mike was devoted to his wife, Paige McKay. Together they built a home filled with love, humor, and faith. He was the proud father of two daughters, Madeline and Lily McKay, both of Denver, Colorado, who were the light of his life.
Mike is also survived by his parents, Mary Ann and Joe McKay of Lubbock; his sister, Sheryl McKay Piper and husband Mark of Miami, Florida; his mother-in-law, Brenda Higley of Amarillo; and sister-in-law, Carla Holeva and husband Danny of Midland. He was a beloved uncle to Helen and Chance Segura of New York City, Emily Holeva of Midland, Maggie and Marshall Clark of Denver, Charley McKay of Dallas, and Jack and Ryli McKay of Lubbock. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Richard McKay of Amarillo and Kay and Tom McHorse of Austin, along with cousins from Texas to Virginia of whom he was quite fond. Finally, Mike was blessed by the two best friends a man could ask for, John Chambers and wife, Maureen, of Santiago, Chile, and Mark McKay and wife, Marcy, of Canyon, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David McKay; his father-in-law, Tom Higley; and his uncle and aunt, Pete McKay and Gerry McKay.
A gifted contractor and home remodeler, Mike was admired for his craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the care he took in every project. His clients became his friends. Beyond his work, he was known for his selfless heart, ever-present smile, and the deep love and loyalty he showed his family and friends. Mike thrived when he was helping others, and was proud to have donated hair four times to make wigs for cancer survivors.
Mike’s favorite moments were simple ones — time at his beloved Palo Duro Club, listening to music, reading five books at once, sipping good coffee, catching NCIS reruns, and any time spent with Paige, Madeline, and Lily.
A service celebrating Mike’s life will be held Monday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1101 Slide Road, Lubbock. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount Blvd, Amarillo, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Chaplain’s Fund at All Saints Episcopal School in Lubbock; St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Lubbock; or the David D. McKay Scholarship Fund at http://OpportunityPlan.com.
Take a moment today to love God and take care of one another. As Mike often said, “If you focus on those two things, everything else will work out.”
