Michael Nelson Wells “Popeye”, 81, of Amarillo, TX passed away May 20, 2024.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. 

Mike was born August 17, 1942 in Dallas, TX to Homer and Shirley Wells. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, TX in 1960. He then attended Baylor University from 1960-1962 and joined the Airforce serving from 1962-1970. He trained as a clerk at Amarillo Airforce Base in 1962 and served both in Korea and Vietnam. 

Mike enjoyed reading, dancing and being around his friends and family. He was crazy about music and had a great sense of humor. He loved football and his dogs, Maxine, Nixon, and especially Oliver. Mike was the definition of selfless, always caring for others. He had a hunger for knowledge and learning. Mike will be fondly remembered for his famous “Queso” and “Cookies” on Sunday. 

He is preceded in death by his stepdaughters, Niki Kelly and Jackie Kelly both of California; and grandson, Luke Freeman of Amarillo, TX.

Mike is survived by his wife, Darlene Wells; sister, Janiel Wells of Livingston, TX who raised his daughter Amanda for which he was so grateful; children, Blake Ogilvie of Houston, TX and Amanda Wells of Fairfax, CA; stepchildren, Teri Kelly and partner Ron Perkes of Novato, CA, Bridget Owens and husband Tom of Green Valley, AZ, Michael McCaullum of Bryan, TX, Tonya Freeman and husband Wilson of Amarillo, TX, and Randa Scott and husband Michael of Austin, TX, Jenny McBride of Columbus, OH and grandchildren; Cleo Mae Wells-Frey, Tanner Hankamer, Pamala Barrie, Paige McBride, Aram Sapien, Ashley Sapien, Robert Nelson Devivo , Anthony Devivo, Ayliza Sinclair, Brooke Ogilvie, Carson Ogilvie, Cameron Ogilvie, Brayden Ogilvie, Berkley Baggett, Wils Freeman, and Lena Scott; and great-grandchildren, Ellie, Sophia, and Charlotte.
