Nate was born on October 15, 1976 in Los Angeles, CA to Randy “Jon” Magloughlin and Teresa Ann Christianson. Jon Magloughlin passed away when Nate was 6 years old. From an early age God was at work in Nate’s life, calling him to salvation in early elementary school. Under the influence of an impactful student pastor in California who invested in and discipled him, Nate began growing in his walk with Jesus and took his faith seriously. He also took athletics seriously, competing in a number of various sports up through Junior High until he chose to focus primarily on football in high school where he was a formidable quarterback at Hart High School, and after moving to Hickory, NC before his Junior year also played at St. Stephens High School briefly before a significant back injury. He graduated from St. Stephens in 1995. Nate was active in the youth ministry at Highland Baptist Church in Hickory, where he also met and befriended his future wife Amy, who was a year behind him at St. Stephens. The youth minister at Highland, Kem Lindsay, also had a significant influence on Nate’s life and spiritual walk, and during Nate’s senior year he felt a distinct call to ministry. Upon high school graduation he attended N.C. State University, and after accepting a position in student ministry at Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC he transferred to UNC Charlotte where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in Organizational Communication. He married Amy Elizabeth Winburn on May 27, 2000 and continued to serve at Parkwood under mentor and pastor Jeff Long as a student pastor, and was ordained for gospel ministry during his time there. In fall of 2001 Nate and Amy moved to Louisville, KY for Nate to attend seminary full-time at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. During his time in Louisville Nate served at Ninth and O Baptist Church under mentor and pastor Dr. Bill Cook in various capacities, teaching Sunday School, and overseeing their Assimilation Ministry. He graduated from Southern in May 2004 with a Master of Divinity. He also later completed a Doctorate of Ministry Degree at Southern in December of 2018. In the Fall of 2004 he took an interim position at Parkwood Baptist as a Pastoral Care Pastor before taking his first Senior Pastorate at West Side Baptist Church in Chester, SC. In September of 2007 Nate accepted the call to the Senior Pastorate at Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo, TX at the age of 30 and served faithfully in that role for 18.5 years until his recent passing.

To summarize a life of faith, leadership, influence, and service in a few paragraphs is impossible; but those who know Nate knew him to be a faithful and devoted Christian, husband, father, pastor, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a life full of challenges that the Lord used to form him into the man he was. He was a man of conviction, taking seriously his responsibility as pastor and shepherd. His overarching goal was to boldly proclaim the truth of God’s Word and practically apply it while challenging others to do the same. He was also fiercely committed to his family, making it his aim not to put the church ahead of them. He delighted in and supported Amy and the kids and made the effort to be at every event and milestone, coaching soccer teams, cheering loudly from sidelines and stands, attending concerts, and cross country meets. He also had a unique sense of humor that caught people off guard who couldn’t tell if he was joking or being serious. He was also intensely direct and knew exactly what he wanted to communicate and never one to beat around the bush. He was gifted with learning and remembering people’s names and was eager to welcome visitors at church and get to know people everywhere he went. Anyone who played games with Nate knew him to be competitive, and always eager to help and ‘coach’ other players if it wasn’t detrimental to his own pursuit of victory. When not at home or at church Nate’s happy place was on the golf course with friends. Another of his interests was Minnesota Vikings football. He regularly watched and occasionally attended games, often with one or both sons. He was a connector of people and took joy in networking and connecting people with people and positions. As a strong leader he was also a developer of people, and took interest in loving and building into his church staff and others under his influence, including his family. Nate was humble, regularly recognizing and admitting his weaknesses, and always wanting to grow as a pastor, husband, father, and friend. He was also an avid reader, primarily for the purpose of his pastoral study and spiritual growth.

In the last 3.5 years of his life Nate battled cancer and many other physical struggles as a result. He remained committed to the church, desiring to be in the pulpit and at the office as long as he was physically able. He loved his family well and loved the people of Trinity Baptist Church and considered it an honor and privilege to serve as their pastor over so many years. Nate was transparent about the toll his suffering took on him physically, emotionally, and spiritually; but his desire was to point people to His Sovereign and Loving Savior whom he knew and trusted personally. In the last 6 months of his life Nate read multiple books about heaven, and with his recent health struggles he grew increasingly eager to experience complete healing, rest, and the fullness of joy in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is loved deeply and will be profoundly missed by all who were touched by his life and ministry. He would want his legacy to be God’s grace displayed in a Colossians 1:28,29 life: “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that He powerfully works within me.”

Nate is preceded in death by his father, Randy Jon Magloughlin. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Amy Elizabeth Magloughlin; children Jackson Nathanael Magloughlin (21), Garrison Luke Magloughlin (19), and Annison Grace Magloughlin (15); siblings Joy Noelle Magloughlin of Minnetonka, MN, Haley Brianne Paterson Branderhorst of Reno, NV, and Matthew James Magloughlin of Sparks, NV; and parents Steve and Teresa Paterson of Sparks, NV.
