Nina Frances Simpson

Jun 27, 1934 — Aug 18, 2026

Nina Frances Prince Simpson, 92, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, at Goodlife Senior Living in Amarillo.

Nina was born June 27, 1934, in Amarillo, Texas, to Luther Albert Prince and Velma Gregory Mills Prince. A graduate of Amarillo High School, she spent the majority of her life in the Amarillo community she called home. Nina was the beloved matriarch of a large and loving family. She took great pride in the life she built and found her greatest joy in being surrounded by those she loved.

Nina was the kind of mother and grandmother who was always there. She showed up for her children and grandchildren, attended their events, celebrated their accomplishments, and took a genuine interest in their lives. She lovingly created scrapbooks filled with photographs and memories, preserving cherished moments and milestones for generations to treasure. Nina was immensely proud of those she loved and made sure they knew it.

She was caring, helpful, and encouraging, and always welcomed a visit. Nina had a wonderful way of noticing the little things. She was generous with compliments and quick to notice a new outfit, a pretty hairstyle, a beautifully decorated room, or an accomplishment worth celebrating. It was one of the many ways she made people feel seen, valued, and loved.

Nina loved bringing people together. Over the years, she hosted countless holidays, birthdays, and celebrations. Her home was a gathering place filled with laughter, conversation, and lasting memories. Having the people she loved gathered around her brought Nina tremendous happiness and created traditions that will continue to be treasured for years to come.

Nina understood the importance of having loved ones close. After losing both of her parents by the age of 31, she went on to create a full and beautiful life surrounded by generations of people she adored. Perhaps because of that early loss, she never took the gift of time together for granted.

Nina also had a creative spirit and a natural talent for making things beautiful. She loved decorating and attended the School of Floral Design in Tucson, Arizona. She went on to work for many years as a floral designer at Safeway, where her creativity and eye for detail were a perfect fit. Earlier in her life, she worked as a dispatcher for Ford Motor Company.

She participated in Garden and Home Improvement Clubs and enjoyed giving back to her community, including volunteering at nursing homes and supporting the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Nina was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Albert Prince and Velma Gregory Mills Prince; her first husband, Norris Root; her husband, Berry Simpson; her brother, George “GW” Prince; her son, Greg Root; and her daughter-in-law, Candy Root.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Lynne Root Getschow (George) and Holly Sue Root Schreur (Mike).

Cynthia’s children are Brandi Crofford, Ginger Crofford Russ (Bart), and Garrett Getschow (Rose); grandchildren include Cody and Kenny Crofford, Victoria Post (Tyler), Violet and Sage Getschow; and great-granddaughter, Eden Wilhite.

Holly’s children are Melissa Schreur French (Kip) and Joshua Schreur, and grandchildren Brooke, Kali, and Austin French.

Nina also leaves behind the children of her late son Greg: Richard Root, Berry Root (Heather), Alexis Ellis, and Parker Ellis-Root, and grandchildren Jackson and Samuel Root.

Nina will be deeply missed for her presence, her encouragement, her thoughtful compliments, her phone calls, and the comfort of simply knowing she was there. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she created, the memories she so carefully preserved, and the generations she loved so deeply. Those who knew Nina will remember a woman who cared wholeheartedly, celebrated the people around her, and understood that some of life’s most precious moments are found simply in being together.
