Ova Fay Smith, 92, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on August 8, 2025.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Harvest Time Amarillo, 409 S. Cleveland, with Daniel Barnes officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Ova was born on May 27, 1933, to Berniece Hershal (Burns) and John Franklin Dressler in Mountainair, New Mexico. She moved to Amarillo when she was young. Ova worked as a waitress at Betty’s Restaurant until she returned to her hometown. She was a member of Harvest Time Church and enjoyed participating in the many activities offered there. Ova loved playing dominoes, a game she frequently enjoyed with her father and brothers. She had a fondness for coffee, particularly when it was loaded with cream and sugar.
Ova took pride in her appearance, always ensuring that her purse and shoes matched, and she never left the house without her lipstick. Cowboy hats and boots were also among her favorite accessories. After her husband left, Ova raised three children on her own. For sixteen years, she lived at Bivins Village Apartments, where she made many friends. Later, she moved to a charming apartment behind her granddaughter's place, where she resided until she transitioned to Five Points Nursing Home. During her time at Five Points, Ova charmed the nurses and doctors alike. Everyone fell in love with her, even though she was spunky and unafraid to speak her mind.
Ova lived her life with a heart full of love, a song on her lips, and a sparkle in her eyes. She loved life deeply, cherished her walk with the Lord, and lifted her voice in song whenever she could. Among her greatest joys were her grandchildren—being their beloved “Mema” was not just a role she held, but the very heartbeat of her life.
Her laughter was contagious, her hugs were the kind you never wanted to end, and her playful, spunky spirit remained with her until her final days. She taught us the beauty of living fully, loving fiercely, and holding tight to faith through every season.
We will miss her voice, her warmth, and her presence, but we rejoice in knowing she is now singing with the angels in the presence of her Savior.
She made the world a better place.
Her songs now soar,
In Heaven’s choir forevermore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; one daughter, two sisters; six nephews; one niece, two great-nieces; and one great-grandson.
She is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Clark and Vonda Nanez; a son, Johnny Smith, of MO; four granddaughters; three grandsons; five nieces; four nephews; eight great-granddaughters; eleven great-grandsons; seven great-nephews; nine great-nieces; and numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
